Electrical Engineering Intern / Co-op - Test Systems and Automation Job Description: We are looking for a sharp, hardworking, creative, hands-on electrical engineering intern. The candidate should be comfortable working both individually and as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team (mechanical, electrical, and software) to help tackle challenging and innovative projects. Must be willing to work in a dynamic, adaptive environment where the technical focus is continuously changing. Electrical Engineering Intern / Co-op - Test Systems and Automation Summary The main project for this term is helping design, build, and commission an instrumented test stand for a government contract. The system will integrate pressure, temperature, flow, and rotational speed (RPM) sensors, along with motors, actuators, and associated controls. This will require the intern to work very closely with mechanical engineers, who act as the overall project lead. The Electrical Engineers and Software Engineers will provide technical guidance and mentoring as subject matter experts. The main responsibilities will include:
- Sourcing and integrating appropriate sensors, data acquisition hardware, motor drives, and actuator interfaces for different applications
- Manually wiring sensors and equipment, creating schematics and wiring diagrams, and troubleshooting electrical connections
- Coding a software interface, preferably in Python, to acquire, record, and visualize real-time sensor data and support actuator control and automated test sequences
- Coding monitoring software to detect abnormal conditions and initiate controlled test shutdowns; supporting hardware emergency stops and interlocks under engineering supervision, with safety functions independent of the Python application
- Creating a user manual detailing operation of the interface and equipment, including software documentation and troubleshooting procedures
- Calibrating measurement channels, verifying system performance, and detailing lessons learned and further suggested improvements
Preferred experience includes:
- National Instruments data acquisition hardware and experience interfacing NI hardware with Python is strongly preferred
- Python for instrumentation, data logging, test automation, or data visualization
- Analog and digital I/O, thermocouples, RTDs, pressure transducers, flow meters, encoders, motor drives, relays, or solenoids
- Schematic design and wiring diagram experience
- Experience using EE tools such as power supplies, multimeters, and oscilloscopes
- Electronics lab testing with analysis of results, including sensor calibration and signal conditioning
Requirements
- Strong academic record in an Electrical Engineering or Electrical and Computer Engineering degree.
- Knowledge of analog circuits such as filters, amplifiers, or power supplies, and foundational knowledge of sensors and electrical measurement.
- Programming experience in Python or another language, with an interest in hardware integration; hands-on coursework, personal projects, and student engineering teams are welcome
- Desire to contribute to a dynamic environment in a self-motivated, action-oriented fashion.
- Ability to work well both as part of team and independently.
- Efficient personal time management, organization, and task prioritization
- Strong technical communication (verbal and written) to effectively present/report work for internal engineering team and potentially external customers
- Due to the nature of this project, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen
- Upperclassmen
- 3.2 GPA or higher
