Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks an accomplished and forward-thinking leader to serve as its Business Operations Officer (BOO)/Deputy Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Business Services Directorate (BSD) in this onsite role.

The Business Services Directorate provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success. Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven's Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, Digital Transformation Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab's fiscal matters and its approximately $900 million annual budget.

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO)/ALD for BSD, this highly visible leadership role offers a unique opportunity to shape the financial and operational strategy of one of the nation's premier research institutions. As the CFO's principal operational deputy, the BOO/Deputy ALD-BSD plays a critical role in ensuring the effective stewardship of resources that enable world-class science, groundbreaking discovery, and national impact.

Key Responsibilities

The BOO/Deputy ALD-BSD provides executive leadership for the Laboratory's Business Services function and serves as the operational leader responsible for translating business and financial strategy into effective execution across the organization. The role ensures that business processes support the Laboratory's scientific mission through sound financial management, strong business partnerships, and consistent operational practices. The BOO/Deputy ALD-BSD drives continuous improvement initiatives across business functions and maintains effective communication and collaboration with key stakeholders, including Procurement, to align business operations, purchasing strategies, and service delivery with Laboratory objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

Deputy ALD for BSD Role

  • Serving as the CFO's principal operational deputy and representative in matters related to BSD's overall business processes, financial management, organizational performance, and strategic initiatives.

  • Providing strategic leadership and execution by translating financial and operational priorities into actionable plans that support Laboratory objectives.

  • Monitoring organizational performance and identifying risks, opportunities, and corrective actions to strengthen outcomes, enhance accountability, and support effective decision-making.

  • Leading operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, transparency, service delivery, and organizational effectiveness.

  • Partnering with Associate Laboratory Directors, Directorate leadership, Program Managers, and administrative organizations to build trusted relationships and support successful program execution.

  • Coordinating business and financial interactions with DOE program offices, auditors, and external stakeholders while demonstrating exceptional executive-level communication and professional credibility.

  • Supporting contractor assurance, internal controls, compliance, and enterprise risk management activities across the Laboratory.

  • Representing the CFO in executive reviews, management forums, audits, and institutional activities while serving as a trusted advisor on business and financial matters.

Business Operations Officer Role

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Business Operations Managers and financial professionals, fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, innovation, and professional growth while building leadership capability for the future.

  • Building a high-performing business management organization that promotes collaboration, professional growth, succession planning, and continuous learning.

  • Establishing and maintaining consistent business management practices, financial controls, and operational processes across Business Offices to ensure effective stewardship of Laboratory resources.

  • Directing the development, execution, and monitoring of operating, capital, and project budgets across research and support organizations.

  • Overseeing forecasting, cost planning, workforce planning, resource allocation, and financial performance management activities to support informed decision-making and mission success.

  • Ensuring accuracy, integrity, timeliness, and compliance of financial reporting, analyses, and submissions.

  • Providing executive-level financial and operational analyses that support strategic planning, investment decisions, and organizational performance.

  • Driving a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer-focused service throughout the business management community.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in financial or business management, budgeting, planning, or related disciplines.

  • Minimum of six (6) years of leadership experience managing professional staff within a complex organization.

  • Demonstrated experience leading financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance management functions.

  • Experience advising senior leadership and presenting financial and operational information to executive audiences.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive organizational results.

  • Proficiency with financial systems, reporting tools, and data analytics platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field.

  • Professional certification such as CPA, CMA, CGFM, or equivalent.

  • Experience within a Department of Energy environment, national laboratory, federally funded research and development center, research institution, or similarly complex organization.

  • Experience leading business transformation, operational improvement, or organizational change initiatives.

  • Knowledge of contractor assurance systems, enterprise risk management, internal controls, and performance-based management practices.

  • Experience managing large and complex operating, capital, and project portfolios.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair,equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $184,400-$306,100 / year. Salary offers will becommensuratewith the final candidate's qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
