The Engineering Manager receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

Under the general direction and guidance of the Facilities Director, the Assistant Director- Design Engineering will lead a team of professional engineers. H/She will lead the effort of providing: engineering peer reviews for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and civil designs, consulting services to other Facilities Services units, other department in UCSF and assigned UCSF contractors and sub-contractors. H/She will coordinate and evaluate requested installations, maintenance, modification, system overhaul, service and repair of mechanical / plumbing systems, assist in monitoring and evaluating energy and utility consumption and provide the required recommendation to meet the department's energy efficiency goals as well as establish benchmark for new and existing buildings using industry best practice standards.

Provides management oversight to professional engineering staff engaged in physical planning and construction to include civil, electrical and mechanical specialties. When necessary, performs technical responsibilities of Engineering team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related area ten years experience and / or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Professional Engineering License

  • Valid CA driver license

  • Expert knowledge of OSHA, Environmental, Health and Safety Management regulations as they relate to design and execution of project and incorporating sustainable development practices.

  • Extensive knowledge of engineering applicable building codes and regulations

  • Broad knowledge associated with the planning, design and implementation of engineering systems in a plant environment such as construction of engineering systems serving bio-medical resarch facilities including vivarium, A/BSl-2 and 3 laboratories, Cantral utility plants and multi use spaces.

  • General knowledge of key aspects of all engineering disciplines being managed.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and influence others.

  • Highly effective communication and presentation skills to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner to diverse groups.

  • Demonstrated advanced interpersonal skills to effectively interact with senior management, peer level managers and outside contacts on matters of significance.

  • Strong ability to prioritize and oversee initiatives for unit in order to achieve goals and objectives.

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

  • Certificates in engineering management and specialty areas covered by the various engineering disciplines being managed preferred.

  • Preferred Certifications; APPA, CEFP, IFMA CFM/FMP, BOMI RPA/FMA

  • Broad knowledge of campus human resources, fiscal, and budgetary policies and procedures.

  • Strong knowledge of internal and external regulatory compliance relative to engineering construction management

  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously coordinate a large number of projects, of varying size, type, and complexity.

  • Extensive work experience in educational research universities or institutions and demonstrated collaboration with researchers and university officials in solving complex problems and providing engineering guidance using applicable principles, practices and procedures.
