Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Project Assistant.We are seeking a per diem bilingual Russian-English candidate to work in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine (PI: Alan Mendelsohn, MD) on a per diem/project basis to support translation and adaptation of family-facing and training materials for an early childhood parenting program, PlayReadVIP. Our team examines and delivers parenting interventions to improve child development outcomes in at-risk populations at pediatric clinics across in New York City (PlayReadVIP; www.playreadvip.org). This role is ideal for a graduate student, professional translator, community health worker (CHW), public health trainee, educator, or a bilingual professional with strong written Russian-language skills and familiarity with communicating across cultures.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Train in and understand standardized program to parents of infants and young children.
  • Translate written program materials from English to Russian.
  • Translate selected materials from Russian to English.
  • Review translations for readability, tone, and conceptual accuracy using established frameworks such as the Ecological Validity model.
  • Engage in literature reviews and knowledge finding of parenting and cultural values and characteristics in Russian-speaking communities in NYC.
  • Engage in review of programmatic materials for cultural adaptation for Russian-speaking communities in NYC.
  • Help identify culturally appropriate wording for family-facing content.
  • Flag language that may require adaptation rather than direct translation.
  • Participate in feedback meetings with program staff as needed.
  • Develop rapport with families in the program.
  • Conduct needs assessments, interviews, and focus groups with community members, parents, staff and program participants as applicable.
  • Provide translation support for meetings, trainings, and other spoken/written communications.
  • Attend parent advisory committee meetings, if applicable, to obtain feedback.
  • Maintain and organize project materials.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team of research and clinical staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a High school diploma or equivalent.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Office 365.
Strong analytical ability, critical thinking, and proactive problem-solving skills.
Must be organized, detailed-orientated, dependable and flexible.
Have excellent oral/written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding design and implementation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Fluency in spoken and written Russian language, ideally including knowledge of parenting and child development terminology. Strong attention to detail and ability to preserve meaning across languages. Bachelors Degree in child development, child life, infancy, special education, family processes, maternal and child health, or related field (preferred). Previous experience with Russian-language translation and interpretation strongly preferred. Experience with community outreach, education, healthcare, or public health preferred. Familiarity with child development, family support, healthcare or education settings preferred. Lived, learned, or professional experience and knowledge of Russian-speaking immigrant communities in the USA.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $19.69 - $23.88 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
