New Hanover County Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant to help create a welcoming and positive library experience at our Pine Valley Library. This position will be a primary point of contact and provide customer service at all public service points (reference, circulation, and children's) so great interpersonal skills, friendliness, and a positive attitude are essential for success in this role.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- Frequently interacting with patrons in person and by telephone, providing courteous customer service.
- Providing assistance to children, teens, adults and seniors with use of library resources, and informing of programs and services.
- Answering basic questions, assisting with library needs, and referring patrons to appropriate staff or additional resources as needed.
- Using the integrated library system (ILS) to process materials and register patrons.
- Accurately shelving library materials.
- Assisting with Library opening and closing procedures
- Protecting each customer's right to privacy and access, adhering to the American Library Association Bill of Rights and Code of Ethics
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meeting the scheduling needs as required by the county.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Work Hours:
- Work schedule will vary with a minimum of 8 hours and potential of up to 19 hours per week.
- Work schedule is subject to change based on departmental needs. Must be available to work during emergency situations.

Salary Information:
The hiring salary
for this position is
$17.4639 hour
.
Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience in a library, bookstore or other frontline customer service role (e.g. retail, food service, or hospitality).
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Flexibility with scheduling.
- Proficient using computer technology.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail, and ability to quickly grasp and use new concepts.
- Ability to interact courteously and professionally with the public and coworkers in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to respond appropriately to information-seeking behaviors and diverse learning styles.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, work independently, and exercise judgment in resolving customer issues.
- Willingness to adjust to a constantly changing work environment
Physical activities and demands:
- Spends several hours a day in a stationary position to assist customers
- Frequently moves and positions bins of books which weigh up to 30 pounds
- Frequently transports large numbers of books to various locations in the building
- Positions, places, and removes books and other library materials around, onto, and from shelves at a wide range of heights
- Communicates and exchanges information and ideas with customers and coworkers throughout the workday
- Some roles operate a computer, cash register, and other electronic devices throughout the day

In compliance with G.S. 153A-94.2(b), if this position requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity, the county must require the applicant to undergo a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI for all offers of employment made after October 1, 2025. These checks must be performed in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26, which authorizes the SBI to provide fingerprint-based state and national criminal record checks to cities and counties. Additional information on how to complete this required check will be provided to the selected candidate after an offer of employment is accepted.
