Position Summary

Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science offers multiple opportunities for clinicians to participate as preceptors in medical student education. From clinical skills/reasoning to humanities and palliative care, we seek experienced and credentialed individuals to teach medical students 1:1 or in small groups as part of several required courses and clerkships.

While this position is not eligible for our regular employee benefits, all RFU employees are eligible to accrue personal leave in accordance with IL law. All RFU employees are also eligible to make unmatched contributions to voluntary supplemental pre-tax and post-tax retirement plans.

RFU is a national leader in interprofessional research and practices, and is nationally recognized for its research in areas including neuroscience, brain-related diseases, inherited disorders, proteomics, cancer cell biology and immunology, cardiac resuscitation, and gait and balance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare in advance for cases and instructional sessions by reviewing PowerPoint slides, completing assigned readings and/or viewing training videos.
  • Advise students in case preparation, if needed, then facilitate instructional small group discussions to promote learning and reflection.
  • Assess students utilizing a rubric, as directed. Provide narrative and/or verbal feedback.
  • Participate in on-going facilitator orientation/training/debriefing sessions and improve one's instruction as warranted.
  • Depending on the course, specific preceptor duties may include:
    • Facilitate small groups of students in taking a complete medical history; communication; performing a comprehensive physical exam; and clinical reasoning skills.
    • Support the Education Director with orientation and clinical education activities within their specialty (for M3 clerkship preceptors)
    • Facilitate an internal medicine OSCE and provide feedback to students performing History & Physicals and oral presentations.
    • Assist in creation of teaching vignettes, either individually or as part of a team to develop, enhance, and deliver course content within expertise.
    • Work with the course facilitators on training and periodic debrief sessions.
    • Facilitate standardized patient encounters in which students practice palliative care communication skills and discuss safe opioid prescribing and addressing opioid use disorder.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience

  • A copy of the diploma for the highest degree earned and also the highest clinical degree earned, if different and relevant to the position.

  • Graduate of an accredited MD, DO, or DPM program (for Clinical Skills, Clinical Reasoning, and humanities courses) or a PhD, PsyD, PharmD, DPT, EdD, MSW, MPH, or equivalent program (for humanities course).

  • Three to five years in clinical practice and/or two years of teaching experience at the graduate level in a health professional program.

  • A faculty appointment may be required, with eligibility and need determined at a later time. Appointments would be offered based on an initial limited review indicating the candidate meets the minimum qualifications for the educational credentials and experience relevant to the position. A record of research, scholarship, or achievement appropriate for the program and degree level would be required

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience in facilitating small group conversations and difficult conversations.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Adept with online video meetings e.g screen sharing.

  • Ability to learn and utilize educational software and computer training management systems.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.

  • Ability to communicate by email or phone in a timely fashion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using facilitative and interactive instructional approaches in higher education.

  • Knowledge of current educational theory and methodology.

  • Experience in medical education curriculum development

  • Experience with other educational or healthcare-related accrediting bodies

  • Experience with vulnerable and historically disadvantaged populations.

  • Experience in psychology, psychiatry, social work, public health, or related fields (for humanities course).
