This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we're developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin's mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.

We are seeking a Sr. Manager of Software Engineering for Data Platform Automation (DPA) team. DPA owns and operates the event-driven Lakehouse infrastructure that powers AI agents, enterprise analytics, and operational intelligence across every program at Blue Origin. The team manages over 2,000 data ingestion pipelines and tables sourced from enterprise systems, ensuring data is fresh, reliable, and AI-ready.This role will drive the design, development and automation of many efforts including:

  • Metadata-Driven Ingestion- Blue Origin's next-generation ingestion platform providing "single-ingestion, multi-target" capability across the data platform.

  • Auto Generating Pipelines - Integrating MINT with our source system APIs and canonical models so data pipelines and tables are autogenerated from configs without an engineer having to do anything.

  • Databricks Lakehouse Platform Operations- Owning platform reliability, cost governance, and performance optimization across Blue Origin's unified data intelligence platform, targeting 99.99% uptime for all Tier-1 services.

  • Accelerated Data Availability- Driving data freshness improvements from source to target of 90%, supporting near real time data availability across our enterprise data.

This position requires an engineering leader who can execute a scalable, cloud-native, automation-first data platform roadmap while partnering closely with data scientists, AI/ML teams, and engineering teams across the company. You will own operational excellence, ensuring stability, reliability, self-healing capabilities, and cost discipline while championing engineering best practices and growing a high-performing team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a high-caliber team of nine software and data engineers to develop cloud-native, automation-first data solutions at scale.

  • Lead the development of a next-gen Data Platform with strong emphasis on automation, scalability, and self-service capabilities.

  • Implement metadata-driven, event-driven data ingestion pipelines that seamlessly scale to process millions of events per day with anomaly detection and self-healing capabilities.

  • Enforce data security and governance with automated access control, policy enforcement and data lineage tracking.

  • Own and drive SLOs, SLAs, RCAs and KPIs for high availability of the data platform.

  • Implement intelligent monitoring, automated failure recovery and predictive scaling using observability tools.

  • Own and enhance AI integrations with our data including MCPs, APIs, CLIs and other tools to allow company data and context to be injected into AI.

  • Continuously optimize query performance and data storage for cost-effective, high-speed analytics.

  • Work with practitioners and customers to develop new ways to federate analysis, operational application development and enable a "shift left" philosophy to data ownership.

  • Monitor, analyze and report on the performance of the platform, identifying areas for improvement and making data-driven decisions to optimize the platform's performance and return on investment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Computer Science or related field.

  • 8 years of experience writing production-grade code in a modern programming language.

  • 3 years of people management experience.

  • Experience building (from design to production), maintaining and operating an always-on, cloud data platform.

  • Experience hiring top talent and driving career growth for early-in-career and senior engineers.

  • The ability to set ambitious goals with measurable results and familiarity with frameworks such as OKRs.

  • Experience working with product managers to collaboratively set a vision.

  • Hands-on experience with one or more of Spark, Databricks, Palantir, Kafka, Flink, ML Flow or similar technologies. Also, comfortable diving into the code with your team when the situation calls for it.

  • Experience working with APIs and Cloud based data platform implementations including observability & monitoring, data cataloging, metadata management and security & governance.

  • Clear understanding of the software development lifecycle from reviewing requirements to debugging sophisticated systems in production.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience integrating AI-powered search and Knowledge Graphs with LLMs (AWS Bedrock) and RAG architectures.

  • Strong expertise in metadata-driven automation for data ingestion, quality and governance.

  • Deep knowledge of access control frameworks (IAM, RBAC, ABAC, Zero Trust).

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $197,004.00 - $275,805.60

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
