Job Summary

Chaplain 2 - Provide comprehensive spiritual services to patients and caregivers. Such services include an initial spiritual assessment, ongoing support, liaison with the spiritual community, as well as appropriate participation in planning and conducting funeral/memorial services, and participation in overall bereavement assessment and follow up.

This position must possess the ability to work independently and within a team structure for collaborative problem solving. This position will minister to a diverse population and must be sensitive to their beliefs, cultural and ethnic heritage, and spiritual history.

This position is supervised under the general direction of the Human Services Supervisor and Clinical Operations Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Chaplain 2

  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Valid CA driver's license is required and employees must participate in the DMV pull notice system. Auto insurance must comply with UCDH Travel Regulations Policy G-28, pg. 18, item iii; Insurance Coverage: 50/100/50.
  • Ordination or commissioning by one's faith group to serve as a religious leader and endorsement or official recognition by that faith group to function as a chaplain.
  • Bachelor's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies and equivalent and relevant training/experience.
  • Completion of at least one (1) unit of clinical, pastoral education, accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Prior chaplain experience in hospital setting.
  • Prior chaplain experience in palliative care or hospice care setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of spiritual assessment models and assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish connections with patients quickly and to function well in crisis/trauma situations.
  • Advanced pastoral judgement and triage skills.
  • Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in clinical environments.
  • Skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.
  • Thorough knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate care in a multi-faith setting.
  • Thorough organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently with patients and caregivers while also participating in the healthcare team providing coordination of care.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.

Chaplain 3

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program

  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR

  • Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, and equivalent and relevant training/experience.

  • Completion of at least four (4) units of clinical pastoral education, accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.

  • Prior chaplain experience in hospital setting.

  • Prior chaplain experience in palliative care or hospice care setting.

  • Thorough knowledge of spiritual assessment models and assessment skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish connections with patients quickly and to function well in crisis/trauma situations.

  • Advanced pastoral judgement and triage skills.

  • Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in clinical environments.

  • Skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.
  • Thorough knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate care in a multifaith setting.
  • Thorough organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently with patients and families while also participating in the healthcare team providing coordination of care.

  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate spiritual care services that address patients' spiritual, emotional, cultural, and developmental needs, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Preferred Qualifications

Chaplain 2

  • Eligible for certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: the Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).
  • Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, and equivalent and relevant training/experience.
  • 1-2 years prior chaplain experience specifically in palliative care or hospice setting.

Chaplain 3

  • 2-3 years prior chaplain experience specifically in palliative care or hospice setting.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Work environment may include clients' homes, hospitals, care facilities, and clinics.
