This senior managerial-level position is responsible for the integrated operational, technical, and logistical leadership of all anesthesia support services within the Peri-operative division. The Deputy Director of Anesthesia is a key strategic partner to the Anesthesiology and Peri-operative Leadership, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of anesthesia care across all surgical and procedural areas. This role encompasses the direct supervision and professional development of a multidisciplinary technical and support team (Anesthesia Technicians, Storekeepers, OR/Instrument/Equipment Technicians, Sterile Processing Techs). Key functions include coordinating critical clinical equipment readiness, overseeing the perioperative supply chain and instrument management lifecycle, and driving fiscal excellence and a proactive culture of safety and accountability.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Serves as the Operational Lead for both Anesthesia Technical Support and the Sterile Processing Department (SPD), ensuring the continuous readiness of all equipment and supplies.
  • Supports complex anesthesia setups and ensures the immediate technical response capability for high-acuity cases in the OR and GI suites.
  • Directly manages the preventative maintenance, repair coordination, and safety testing of all patient care monitoring equipment and anesthesia delivery systems.
  • Accountability for the daily workflow and output of the SPD, including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and storage processes, prioritizing efficient throughput for the OR and GI.
  • Leads initiatives to improve OR turnover time by optimizing both anesthesia readiness protocols and instrument processing cycles.
  • Provides direct managerial oversight for all assigned technical staff, including Anesthesia Technicians and all SPD/Instrument Technicians, covering the full scope of hiring, training, competency validation, and performance management.
  • Designs and implements mandatory clinical education and skills validation programs focused on the proper handling and reprocessing of specialized equipment, including flexible endoscopes.
  • Fosters a unified, high-performance team culture that emphasizes safety, quality, and collaboration between the Anesthesia and SPD support teams.
  • Responsible for creating staff schedules, adjusting staffing to support OR/SPD/GI demands, approving time off requests, and managing payroll.
  • Inventory, Supply Chain, and Instrument Management
  • Assumes executive responsibility for the overall perioperative supply chain and instrument procurement/logistics within the OR, GI Suites, and SPD.
  • GI Scope Management: Manages the full lifecycle of flexible and rigid endoscopes, ensuring proper inventory levels, coordinating vendor repairs, and establishing a robust system for loaner scopes to prevent procedural delays.
  • Inventory Levels: Directs and monitors inventory tracking for all anesthesia supplies, surgical instruments, and critical reprocessing consumables (e.g., sterilization wrap, chemical disinfectants, biological indicators), implementing lean methodologies to optimize par levels.
  • Creates and manages budgets for supplies and instruments in collaboration with SCB and Anesthesia Leadership, utilizing data analytics and identifying resourcing solutions.
  • Manages and coordinates vendors recalls in accordance with FDA, Safe Medical Device Act, and institutional policies.
  • Oversee the tracking and management of high-value items, implants, and tissue.
  • Sterilization and Disinfection Quality: Holds the SPD accountable for strict adherence to all national quality and sterilization standards, especially those published by AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation). This includes documentation, validation, and verification of all sterilization and high-level disinfection cycles.
  • Monitoring Equipment Reprocessing: Directs and audits the reprocessing protocols for all reusable monitoring equipment (e.g., monitoring probes, cables, transducers, fiber optics), ensuring that cleaning and disinfection methods comply strictly with the manufacturer's Instructions for Use (IFU) and internal infection control policies.
  • Scope Reprocessing Audit: Owns the quality assurance program for the High-Level Disinfection (HLD) of GI endoscopes, conducting frequent audits of cleaning practices, scope storage, fluid leak testing, biological verification processes, and documentation logs to ensure zero tolerance for failure.
  • Quality Improvement: Leads all Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives for the SPD and Anesthesia Technical teams, focusing on reducing sterilization failures, minimizing Immediate-Use Steam Sterilization (IUSS), and optimizing efficiency in instrument turnaround time.
  • Maintains audit-ready documentation and ensures full compliance with TJC, CMS, OSHA, and FDA regulations across all areas.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

1. Eleven (11) years of progressively responsible management work experience in a private or governmental organization:

A. Eight (8) years in the area of designated specialization required by the position

AND

B. Three (3) years supervising the work of a professional staff or process within the designated specialization
  • Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the above three (3) years non-specialized experience requirement
  • Master's degree may be substituted for one (1) year specialized work experience

2. Minimum of Eight (8) years of progressive technical experience in Anesthesia Technology or Sterile Processing Required.

3. Knowledge and skills in the proper sterilization, processing, and distribution of medical instruments and devices, as well as handling and storage of sterile supplies in accordance with regulatory standards;

OR

Knowledge and skills in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and anesthesia technology.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current certification as a Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T./Cer.A.T.T.) via ASATT OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) via HSPA is preferred.
  • Experience managing vendor contracts, RFPs, and departmental budgets is required.
