POSITION SUMMARY

The Pharmacy Buyer manages the entire procurement process for assigned facilities. They will purchase the necessary medications and materials for the pharmacy department. Responsibilities include ordering, inventory management, facilitating medication returns, replacement, and waste. Working with the wholesaler and vendors, the Buyer will manage shortages, process purchase orders and invoices, and review compliance with contracts. The Pharmacy Buyer will work with the individual pharmacy leadership and designees to manage all aspects of pharmaceutical procurement and remain in compliance with organization policies and procedures as well as state and federal law.


Responsibilities

  • Purchases all pharmaceuticals and supplies and ensures the pharmacy has adequate stock to meet daily patient needs based on locally maintained perpetual inventory systems.
  • Communicates with local and corporate pharmacy leadership any changes in buying trends, unusual drug usage and need for new drugs or supplies.
  • Communicates all drug shortages or backorders with local, market and corporate leadership and collaborate to establish shortage mitigation strategies.
  • Executes on shortage mitigation strategies by purchasing alternatives as needed and providing frequent updates to all pharmacy leadership.
  • Maintains contract compliance through review of GPO contract options, monitoring of purchase and pricing trends, adhering to minimum and maximum inventory amounts, and following corporate strategy.
  • Understands and maintains the standards set by the Drug Supply Chain and Security Act (DSCSA).
  • Assists the pharmacy leadership in preparation for pharmacy inventory bi-annually.
  • Follows pharmacy formulary and comply with obtaining products on contract in accordance with hospital GPO and in alignment with corporate driven purchasing strategies.
  • Facilitate ordering of controlled substances in compliance with federal and state law and retain and share with local leadership any necessary documentation.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of activities in accordance with policy, and files appropriate documentation records in a neat and retrievable manner.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Active Registered Pharmacy Technician in good standing with the Board of Pharmacy, if required by state of employment.
  • 3 years previous hospital or specialty pharmacy technician experience (inclusive of training programs.
  • 3+ years purchasing experience.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Active Registered Pharmacy Technician in good standing with the Board of Pharmacy, if required by state of employment.
