Overview The Steam Distribution Department is seeking to hire General Utility Workers (GUW) to perform mechanical and maintenance work on steam distribution components and equipment in the field. Selected candidates for this posting will be assigned to Steam Distribution Field Operations in Manhattan. Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Maintains, repairs, and installs steam piping, associated valves, traps, pumps, and other steam components.
- Works assigned shifts which may include rotating schedules, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to meet the operational needs of the department.
- Selected candidates for this posting will be assigned to Steam Distribution Field Operations in Manhattan.
- Works in high temperature environments and confined or restricted workspaces, including manholes and underground vaults.
- Works in indoor, outdoor, and underground environments in all weather conditions.
- Uses various tools, field power tools, and precision equipment.
- Responds to emergency calls; performs mandated inspections and steam distribution maintenance in the field; and prepares accurate, concise reports.
- Reads and interprets schematic drawings and engineering prints.
- Maintains a working knowledge of confined space entry, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, reading mechanical drawings, industrial safety, and basic electricity.
- Performs asbestos abatements and maintenance associated with steam pipes based on operational needs.
- Accesses customer premises to operate and maintain steam service piping and to read steam meters and system drawings.
- Effectively communicates with customers while providing outstanding customer service.
- Positively represents the company to the public.
- Exercises safe work practices while adhering to environmental policies and procedures.
- Operates a Con Edison vehicle.
- Successfully advances through career path training.
- This position will require the operation of a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) weighing between 10,000-26,000 lbs.
- Comply with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including passing a DOT physical exam, maintaining a valid medical examiners certificate, and participating in random drug testing (including marijuana) before and during employment
- If extended a job offer, you will be required to obtain certifications from the American Red Cross for Standard First-Aid, CPR and Blood Borne Pathogens at your cost.

Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Perform work in underground vaults through manholes
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
- Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
- Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
- Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
- Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
- Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
- Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
