Non Tenure Track, Open Rank Learning and Research Librarian

Florida International University Libraries seeks enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and innovative individuals to serve as Learning and Research Librarians. We anticipate offering three (3) positions in our Learning and Research department. Two positions are available at Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC), and one position at Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC).

The Learning and Research Librarian, as part of the FIU Libraries learning and research services, plays a vital role in providing reference, instruction, and research services at either the Green Library at MMC or the Hubert Library at BBC. This position works both collaboratively and independently within the Learning and Research department. This position supports the library's embedded librarianship and concierge service approach, offering personalized and proactive research support by integrating closely with academic departments, courses, and campus partners to enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship. As a librarian, this individual is expected to fully participate in scholarship and service activities, while working with library faculty and staff across multiple departments to meet the mission and goals of the University Libraries. They will work closely with university partners to expand FIU Libraries initiatives, research visibility, and patron services in keeping with University and Libraries strategic priorities and goals.

As members of a large public university library supporting the research of a Carnegie R1 research institution, FIU Libraries librarians provide services in support of the instructional and research activities of students, faculty, staff, and administration of the University. Successful candidates will possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team with a flexible and adaptable attitude. In keeping with the strategic goals and service-driven mission of FIU Libraries, successful candidates will demonstrate customer service acumen and excellence. Responsibilities

Reference, Instruction & Collection Development

  • Participates in patron service delivery to faculty and students and provides reference services via in-person and virtual modes. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
  • Supports faculty and student learning by providing proactive concierge-style support, including in-depth consultations, virtual and in-person assistance, targeted resource guidance, and other related services.
  • Contributes to Learning and Research instructional programming.
  • Serves as a liaison to an assigned disciplinary area.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of the FIU Libraries' collections, both print and electronic, in assigned disciplines.

Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development

  • Participates in scholarship, faculty governance, and service as a library faculty member.
  • Works cooperatively on departmental or library-wide initiatives as related and assigned.
  • Maintains current awareness of emerging instructional skills and techniques and their applications to library instruction.
  • Actively participates in local, national, and international librarianship organizations.

Outreach Support

  • Develops and implements outreach strategies to promote library services, resources, and programs to students, faculty, and researchers.
  • Builds partnerships with academic departments, research centers, and student organizations to increase awareness and usage of library resources.
  • Collaborates with faculty to integrate library resources and research skills into course curricula and pedagogy.
  • Creates engaging communication materials (e.g., newsletters, social media content, guides) to highlight library initiatives and support academic engagement.
  • Participates in campus and community events to represent the library and foster collaborative relationships.

Instruction & Research Support

  • Develops and delivers instruction sessions, workshops, and learning materials.
  • Supports faculty in integrating information literacy and research topics into instruction.
  • Provides research consultations, instructional support, and promote library resources and services to varied patron communities.
  • Develops guides, exhibitions, and programs to enhance teaching, learning, and research support.
  • Assesses and evaluates instructional efforts, using data to improve teaching strategies and engagement.

Library & Institutional Services

  • Explores new and emerging methods and technologies in the provision of library services, focusing on those related to open scholarship and associated activities. Participates in continuing education, conferences, workshops, seminars, or other activities that enhance professional knowledge.
  • Contributes to the profession through active participation in professional associations, research, or other scholarly activities.
  • Supervises students and/or staff.
  • Other duties as assigned or directed to fulfill the mission and strategic goals of the University and University Libraries.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience in library instruction and workshop development, with knowledge of instructional technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in provision of embedded librarianship services.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in the provision of library services.
  • Experience in promoting library services and outreach.
  • Experience collaborating and working with cross-functional teams.
