Description

The Senior Vice President, Inclusion and Belonging (SVP, I&B) serves as the enterprise leader driving ACS's vision to ensure that inclusion and belonging are embedded in every aspect of its culture, strategy, and operations. In the short term, the position strengthens systems and accountability for inclusion and belonging and builds organization-wide capacity for inclusive leadership and practices. In the long term, the SVP, I&B ensures that inclusion and belonging are strategic differentiators, enabling innovation, global impact, and sustained engagement across ACS's global scientific community and workplace. The position shapes ACS's reputation as a values-driven global scientific organization committed to advancing science for all.

The Office of Inclusion and Belonging (I&B) is the central hub at the American Chemical Society that coordinates, supports, and guides efforts by staff, members, and governance to create work environments so that everyone in the scientific enterprise can thrive. This work is done by leading various campaigns, projects, partnerships, and programs; producing resources and guides; and advising various entities across ACS.

Duties and Responsibilities
*The SVP will be accountable for leading transformational change for inclusion and belonging at the global enterprise level.
*Develop an inclusion and belonging strategy based on organizational requirements and gaps.
*Oversee and monitor the implementation of the inclusion and belonging strategy and the progress of inclusion and belonging programs.
*Provide thought leadership and represent ACS at inclusion and belonging events.
*Evolve inclusion and belonging into an integrated organizational capability, shaping the ACS global scientific community, influencing business strategy, leadership culture at ACS, and ensuring global scalability of inclusive practices.
*Act as a strategic partner to the CEO, Board, and Executive Leadership Team to ensure that inclusion and belonging remain foundational to how ACS engages members of its global scientific community, attracts and retains talent, and serves its mission.

Qualifications
*A bachelor's degree or higher is preferred.
*10+ years of progressive experience in I&B work. Experience to include developing programs andinitiatives to increase awareness of I&B issues; knowledge of underserved communities; and ability toengage effectively with multigenerational audiences.
*10+ years of experience managing projects and teams.
*Demonstrated success in building systems that connect inclusion and belonging outcomes to strategy, innovation, and talent.
*Prior experience influencing executive leaders, navigating governance and stakeholder complexity, and driving measurable impact across global or mission-driven organizations is essential.
*Deep expertise in diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and organizational culture.
*Advanced understanding of data analytics and equitable people systems.
*Strong knowledge of change leadership principles.
*Strong strategic communication skills, credibility across scientific and business communities, and fluency in translating inclusion and belonging into measurable business and cultural outcomes.
*Advanced analytics expertise, global inclusion experience, and cross-cultural leadership are preferred.
*The ability to evolve inclusion and belonging into a shared enterprise mindset
*A strong understanding of scientific language, how scientists get educated and move through the chemistry enterprise, and the evolving trends of the scientific community is preferred.
*Experience with AI ethics, global labor trends, or sustainability integration is advantageous though not mandatory on day one.
*Certification in I&B from a recognized institution is preferred; training in I&B facilitation is desired.

The following experience is a plus but not mandatory for this role:
*A bachelor's in physical science disciplines, or related disciplines, or equivalent experience.
*Previous volunteer or work experience with a scientific association.

This role is based in our Washington, DC office.
