Job Summary

Supports international student engagement at the university by developing and implementing international student activities, programming, and events. Advises students on intercultural adjustment and social, cultural, financial, and personal matters. Liaises with other departments and student groups, and coordinates communication efforts. Manages departmental social media and serves as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.

  • Responsible for international student programs and activities for F-1 and J-1 students and scholars, including International Education Week, workshops, welcome events, coffee hours, graduation ceremonies, and more.
  • Assists with planning and implementation of the International Student Orientation each term, including presenting orientation sessions and activities.
  • Coordinates the peer mentor program including recruitment, training, and supervision of students participating in the program.
  • Coordinates student recruitment and FIU participation in Florida International Leadership Conference. Serves as chaperone/advisor and accompanies student group to the weekend conference.
  • Serves as liaison for student engagement with Campus Life and student groups, including International Student Union, SGA.
  • Assists with leadership of Graduate Assistants and coordination of G.A. hiring processes.
  • Manages department social media.
  • Monitors ISSS website and coordinates information updates as needed.
  • Delivers presentations to faculty, staff, and student groups. Serves on committees as needed.
  • Serves as an Alternate Responsible Officer for the Department of State and as backup to the Associate Director on immigration compliance for J-1 students and scholars.
  • Assists with tracking student programming budget and presenting annual budget request.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of appropriate experience, or Master's degree.


Departmental Requirements

Must be a lawful permanent resident or citizen of the United States as required by the Department of Homeland Security for designation as an Alternate Responsible Officer and/or Designated School Official.



Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with programming and student engagement activities.
  • Experience working with international students or cross-cultural experience preferred.
