The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Counselor, Learning Communities - Pride, De Anza College.

The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy. All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the general direction of the Associate Dean, Learning Communities and the Dean of Equity & Engagement, the Pride and Learning Communities Counselor will provide comprehensive counseling services designed to address the systemic barriers and equity gaps often navigated by LGBTQ+, BIPOC and other disproportionately impacted student communities. The Pride and Learning Communities Counselor will provide leadership and expertise for the cultivation of the Pride Learning Community, while also facilitating counseling support to the Learning in Communities program (LinC) in partnership with LinC faculty and program coordinator(s). The counselor will collaborate closely with instructional divisions, campus support services, and other Learning Communities to provide comprehensive support and instruction tailored to the unique needs of these diverse student groups. Flexible appointment hours, including some evenings and weekends, are required for Learning Community events, workshops, and direct student engagement.

Counseling & Teaching:
  1. Administer specialized counseling services from the Pride Center, providing academic, career, and transfer support through an equity-centered lens.
  2. Serve as a key practitioner in trauma-informed care, with a focused intent on addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ+ and BIPOC student populations.
  3. Teach counseling, personal development, and career exploration courses that promote college success, identity development, and leadership for Learning Communities.
  4. Establish an effective rapport with students and assist them in clarifying academic goals, selecting a major, and educational planning for transfer, associate degree and certificate programs by utilizing educational planning technology.
  5. Coordinate and deliver workshops on educational planning, navigating institutional systems, wellness, career exploration, and transfer readiness.
  6. Collaborate with faculty to embed academic counseling and success strategies in Pride Learning Community and LinC courses.
  7. Participate in Summer Bridge activities.
  8. Collaborate with other instructional divisions and programs on campus including equity programs within Student Success and
  9. Retention Services (SSRS) and the Equity and Engagement division.
  10. Identify and sustain retention strategies to ensure student success in coursework and personal development.
  11. Refer students as appropriate to campus and community resources and services.
  12. Develop relationships with 4-year college and university outreach representatives and work collaboratively with the Transfer Center.

Student Engagement and Program Support
  1. Conduct visits to our LGBTQ+ & BIPOC focused Learning Communities classes to introduce counseling and college support services.
  2. Provide culturally responsive crisis intervention for students that may arise in the Pride Learning Community.
  3. Coordinate activities or events for the Pride Learning Community, in collaboration with the Pride Faculty Coordinator.
  4. Collaborate with the LinC program to provide counseling services (individually, group or workshops) in the Guided Pathways Villages.

Faculty Training and Support:
  1. Assist with faculty teams facing challenging situations in Learning Communities with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students, as needed.
  2. Attend all campus Counseling and Advising In-services.
  3. Support Pride Center Coordinator with campus-wide trainings on LGBTQ+ topics.
  4. Maintain currency in counseling pedagogy and student success strategies by actively participating in internal and external professional development opportunities.
  5. Collaborate with faculty to embed academic counseling and success strategies in Pride Learning Community and LinC courses.

Leadership:
  1. Lead recruitment efforts for the Pride Learning Community, including summer outreach, to ensure a filled program cohort for Fall through Spring terms.
  2. Partner with local schools, county programs, and community-based organizations to promote programs and support recruitment.
  3. Participate in County and Statewide LGBTQ+ and BIPOC and networks.
  4. Consult with Associate Dean, Learning Communities, and other stakeholders to ensure that targeted LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students across programs are being served adequately.
  5. Participate in campuswide LGBTQ+ and BIPOC-based events (such as Lavender Graduation, Queer and Now Conference, Learning Community events, Affinity Group programming, SSRS Center programming etc.) as directed by the Associate Dean.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extracurricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for LGBTQ+ populations with a specific emphasis in issues of gender, diversity in sexual identity and queer counseling issues, as well as in diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.
  2. Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling

OR the equivalent.

Note: A Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills in providing academic, personal, and career counseling to LGBTQ+ students (including sexual orientation, gender identities expressions including trans, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary populations) and BIPOC students, specifically first- generation and low-income college students, through an intersectional lens.
  2. Experience in providing culturally responsive counseling strategies for personal development, college success, and/or career workshops with a specific emphasis in BIPOC and LGBTQ+ identified students.
  3. Experience in teaching counseling, personal development, and career exploration courses.
  4. Experience working with learning communities.
  5. Demonstrated experience in working closely and collaboratively with a team.
  6. Demonstrated strong communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
  7. Experience with counseling related technology, educational planning software, and social media.
  8. Experience working in a student success program serving BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ students.

HIRING RANGE: $84,256 - $135,627 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track, 11-months (11th month July) per year.
