We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Sr. Medical Illustrator (Hybrid) on our Scientific Publication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

This position will provide research, concepting, and production of illustrative figures and
data displays for JAMA and JAMA Network journals and multimedia publications. Collaborate
directly with JAMA Network clinical research authors and MD editors in the
creation of illustrations, images, and data displays.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Medical Illustration

  • Creates original illustrations and data displays for scientific articles, Patient Pages, Medical News stories, specialty issue covers, and other Multimedia and Promotional projects in collaboration with clinician authors and JAMA and JAMA Network MD editors.
  • Independently completes appropriate research to gain in-depth understanding of complex biomedical concepts (e.g., anatomical, cellular, pathophysiologic, genetic) necessary to communicate effectively with authors and editors and develop informative scientific illustrations and data displays.
  • Coordinates project workflow and timelines with Editorial, Production, and Multimedia departments.
  • Evaluates submitted illustrations, diagnostic imaging, and data display content for accuracy and suitability for publication.
  • Prepares author-submitted diagnostic images and photographs for publication.
  • Leads department in creation of illustrative assets to be used by Editorial Graphics and Multimedia departments. Independently organizes and curates expanding library of illustrative assets.
  • Independently archives all Illustration and data display project final and applicable working files for future reuse.

Editorial Graphics Team Support

  • Independently conducts tutorials, instruction, and review of illustrations for junior department illustrators and interns.
  • Assists Editorial Graphics managers with content planning, other miscellaneous projects, and outreach presentations as needed.

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Master's degree in medical illustration from a medical illustration program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Allied and Health Education Programs required or bachelor's degree and Certification in Medical Illustration (CMI) from the Board of Certification of Medical Illustrators required.
  2. 5+ years experience working as a medical illustrator with demonstrated success and increasing independence and responsibilities required.
  3. Excellent drawing skills are required. Must be able to visualize spatial relationships, anatomy, and the human figure accurately.
  4. Strong independent research skills required.
  5. Previous academic and/or professional exposure to scientific concepts, including understanding of anatomy, genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry required.
  6. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) required.
  7. Experience in 3D modeling in MAXON Cinema 4D and ZBrush, 3D animation, and video editing preferred.
  8. Experience with medical journal editorial content, design, and publishing required.
  9. Strong skills in typography and page layout required.
  10. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills required, including demonstrated ability to collaborate with authors and editorial staff to develop illustrations.
  11. Ability to work independently on multiple projects under tight deadlines with attention to detail required.

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $87,394-$115,797. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
