What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a Software Engineer to develop onboard diagnostic and service software for Cybercab. You will build vehicle-side firmware that enables efficient maintenance of a driverless fleet, solving problems that don't exist on owner-operated vehicles: no driver to report issues, no steering wheel for manual repositioning, no tolerance for downtime. You will directly create the software that detects faults, automates service workflows, and keeps Cybercab vehicles on the road. You will join the onboard diagnostic software team in Service Engineering (part of Vehicle Software), which provides real-time diagnostic support, reduces service effort via automated tooling and procedures, and improves Tesla products by working with hardware and software development teams to fix top issues in the field. The team is open to hiring in Palo Alto, CA or Austin, TX.
What You'll Do
- Develop onboard diagnostic firmware for automated fault detection, issue escalation, and service scheduling on vehicles with no owner to report problems
- Build service routines for driverless vehicle operations - impaired vehicle movement, camera calibration, tire condition monitoring, and automated maintenance procedures
- Collaborate with vehicle software engineers to create high-quality additions to Tesla's diagnostic platform, including DTCs, dashboards, and diagnostic routines purpose-built for fleet upkeep
- Partner with Service Engineering to identify top Cybercab field issues and prioritize development work to maximize fleet availability
- Design diagnostic strategies that account for Cybercab-specific constraints: 100% Autopilot uptime requirements, remote-only intervention, and high-utilization duty cycles
- Maintain strong relationships and a reputation for high-quality work with the vehicle software team
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of software development experience in automotive or embedded systems
- Proficiency in C or C++; experience with Python a plus
- Self-starter with bias for action and comfort working with minimal guidance
- Collaborative team player skilled at defining and executing priorities
- Experience with vehicle diagnostics (UDS, DoIP, CAN, DTCs) a plus
