Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Business Development Manager to join our team in San Francisco or Los Angeles. This position is part of the Marketing department's Litigation BD team and will be supporting several key practices, including our nationally recognized Automotive and Complex Litigation groups, and others as needed. This position requires a strategic thinker with excellent communication skills and a thorough understanding of the legal industry.

The Business Development Manager will report to the Senior Business Development Manager. The successful candidate will support our attorneys with all aspects of the firm's and individual lawyers' marketing efforts, including:

  • Proactive Marketing & Strategy - Create, develop, and present new marketing and business development initiatives and opportunities.
  • Business Development - Develop a deep knowledge of the firm's attorneys, clients, experience, and capabilities and translate this knowledge into compelling value propositions for new business generation. Prepare standard and custom pitch materials; draft responses to RFPs; and assist with the development of business development presentations.
  • Legal Directories & Survey Submissions - Compile annual submissions to legal directories, award and ranking submissions, such as Chambers and Legal500.
  • Memberships, Sponsorships, and Conferences - Track and research potential conferences and other thought leadership opportunities to help cross-sell the firm's numerous practices and industries, and promote the firm's brand in key markets.
  • Events - Work in conjunction with our dedicated events team to support all aspects of internal and external marketing events.
  • Strategic Research - Conduct competitive intelligence research and compile information regarding existing and prospective clients, competitor activity, and industry or market trends to aid in creating new business development opportunities.
  • Collateral & Matter Database Maintenance - Draft and regularly update marketing content, including practice area descriptions, lawyer biographies, client presentations, and other materials as needed; maintain and regularly update the matter database(s) for assigned practice group(s). Experience with data entry and matter database management is preferred.
  • Team Collaboration - This role manages one direct report - a Senior Business Development Coordinator who may be located in another office - and reports to a Senior Business Development Manager who is in another office. Contribute to the success of the full team by shifting responsibilities to ensure projects are completed to satisfaction and on time.
  • Relationship Building - Liaise and build relationships with other business service departments at the firm, including Finance, Conflicts, Diversity, Office of the General Counsel, and more to facilitate information gathering for RFPs and pitches.


Minimum qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Business, Communications or Marketing related concentration preferred.
Experience:
  • Six (6) or more years of marketing experience with a law firm or professional services firm required.
  • Prior experience supporting Automotive and/or Litigation practices preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the role of business development within a law firm environment required.
  • Experience with CRMs, content management systems, and proposal generation tools a plus.
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with attorneys, professional staff, team members, client development executives, other law firm administrative departments, and others.
  • Advanced project management and organizational skills, including attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressure.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities, as well as solid judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Familiarity with various AI tools and best practices.

This is an Exempt position.

The anticipated good-faith base salary range for this position is:

  • LA: $133,000 to $183,000 per year.

Your exact offer will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, your experience, skills, and overall qualifications. We also review compensation regularly against industry benchmarks and performance outcomes, so you can grow your career here with confidence-knowing your pay recognizes both your impact and our commitment to an equitable approach.

In addition to a competitive base salary, certain positions are eligible for a comprehensive performance-based bonus, payable monthly or annually.
