Overview
The Senior Project Specialist - Faculty role provides university civil engineering or construction management instructors with hands-on exposure to major heavy civil construction projects. Over an 8-12 week engagement, the selected faculty member will join a FlatironDragados project team-gaining insight into real-world construction sequencing, cost controls, engineering processes, safety practices, quality management, and project delivery methods. What you will be doing
Participate in project engineering activities including production reviews, schedule updates, and technical discussions with engineering and construction teams.
- Observe construction operations to build understanding of field processes, risk identification, sequencing, equipment utilization, and quality requirements.
- Review shop drawings, design specifications, and project documentation to understand real-world application of classroom concepts.
- Support project staff with collecting and reviewing cost, quantity, and schedule data.
- Assist with preparing or evaluating three-week look-ahead schedules.
- Engage with project teams to understand contract requirements, safety protocols, environmental compliance, and construction quality assurance/control practices.
- Participate in the RFI process and learn how design clarifications are managed.
- Attend owner meetings, subcontractor coordination sessions, and project briefings as appropriate.
- Collaborate with estimating, operations, quality, and safety personnel to understand their roles and how they integrate into overall project delivery.
- Participate in field tours and job hazard analysis (JHA) reviews to gain exposure to real-world safety management practices.
What we are looking for
- Current university/college instructor or professor in civil engineering, construction engineering, construction management, or closely related discipline (required).
- Graduate degree in civil engineering or related field (preferred).
- Foundational understanding of civil engineering principles, with interest in heavy civil construction processes (bridges, highways, rail, water infrastructure, marine structures, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a project-based team environment.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Interest in bringing industry learnings back into the classroom and curriculum.
- Ability to work on active construction sites and adapt to outdoor field conditions.
- Ability to meet project site safety requirements and participate in construction field activities.
- Valid driver's license
