Job Summary

The Data Center Operations Technician provides hands-on operational support within a live, mission-critical data center environment during second shift hours. This role is responsible for executing daily data center tasks driven by ticketed requests, including equipment installation, hardware troubleshooting, structured cabling, and smart hands support. The technician regularly monitors ticketing systems, communicates with internal and client-facing teams, and documents all work performed to ensure service continuity, accuracy, and compliance with established procedures.

Job Responsibilities




  • Monitor ticketing systems to identify new service requests, project tasks, and break-fix issues within the data center.



  • Perform equipment installation activities, including rack and stack of servers, switches, routers, and network hardware, ensuring proper mounting, labeling, and airflow orientation.



  • Diagnose and resolve hardware-related issues by replacing failed components such as drives, power supplies, and network interface cards within defined service level agreements.



  • Execute decommissioning activities by safely removing retired equipment, disconnecting cabling, updating asset records, and maintaining organized rack environments.



  • Provide smart hands support for remote teams, including equipment reboots, cable moves, KVM connections, visual verification, and photo documentation as directed.



  • Install, replace, troubleshoot, organize, and label structured cabling, including copper and fiber, following industry best practices and routing standards.



  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients or remote stakeholders through ticket updates to confirm task execution and issue resolution.



  • Document all work performed in the ticketing system, including detailed break-fix notes, actions taken, and resolution outcomes.



  • Follow change management procedures, adhere to approved maintenance windows, and comply with security, safety, and standard operating procedures.



  • Maintain accurate inventory records, update asset tracking systems, and assist with rack diagrams and operational documentation as required.




Job Requirements




  • High school diploma or GED required.



  • One to two years of experience in data center operations, smart hands support, or a related technical role within a live data center environment.



  • Hands-on experience with rack and stack activities, hardware break-fix, and structured cabling.



  • Familiarity with server hardware, network components, and basic connectivity troubleshooting.



  • Experience using ticketing systems, including documenting work and managing work orders.



  • Ability to read and interpret rack elevations, floor plans, and technical documentation.



  • Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills.



  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a shift-based, operational environment.




Physical Requirements




  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.



  • Ability to climb ladders, operate scissor lifts, and work in confined or raised-floor spaces.



  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.



  • Ability to work in a secure, climate-controlled data center environment.
