DEPARTMENT: Infection Control and Prevention

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Infection prevention of epidemiology assists with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Infection Prevention program. Conducts infection surveillance for areas outlined in the annual Infection Surveillance Plan approved by the Hospital Infection Control and Prevention Committee, under the direction of the Infection Control and Prevention Program Director, Sibley Memorial Hospital. Provides Infection Prevention support for the main hospital, Renaissance Skilled Nursing Facility and ambulatory locations that are part of Sibley Memorial Hospital. Assists in regulatory compliance activities. Monitors and evaluates hospital Infection Prevention policies, procedures and practices to ensure all evidence-based infection prevention practices are implemented to assure optimum protection for all patients, visitors, and staff. Identifies and manages outbreaks and exposures in the hospital. Develops and provides education and leads and coordinates quality improvement initiatives. Collects infection data for participation in Hospital sponsored programs and collaborative projects and enters data in NHSN and other databases. Utilizes knowledge of epidemiology, infectious diseases, modes of disease transmission, principles of infection control and prevention, performance improvement, and adult learning methods.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates the significance of healthcare-associated infection data, identifies trends and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Performs environment of care rounds to assure compliance of Infection Prevention policies and procedures.
  • Performs rounds to ensure compliance with isolation precautions, hand hygiene and indwelling device/healthcare-associated infection (HAI) prevention bundles.
  • Prepares and analyzes surveillance, statistical and/or quality improvement reports in an accurate and timely manner for review.
  • Coordinates and monitors quality improvement projects and evaluates the effectiveness of these initiatives.


  • Facilitates management of data collection and analysis for Regulatory Compliance and performance improvement projects including Central Line-Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI), Surgical Site Infections (SSI), Hand Hygiene program or other hospital or Johns Hopkins Health System projects or collaboratives.
  • Analyzes and communicates epidemiologic trends, possible outbreaks, and non-compliance with Infection Prevention policies and procedures.
  • Performs outbreak and exposure investigations as requested by department and hospital leadership, DC Health Department or CDC.
  • Identifies unusual clusters of infections. Conducts epidemiological investigations. Applies appropriate control measures based on epidemiological principles.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



Skills and Abilities Required:




  • Computer literacy required. Computer experience including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint is required. Ability to efficiently navigate a range of computer programs and technology such as databases and programs for entering and sharing information (e.g., zoom, Teams and SharePoint) is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • May be required to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the hospital and department.
  • Carry on call pager and respond to pages as assigned.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information discreetly and diplomatically. Maintains HIPAA compliance for confidential patient information.



Minimum Education and Experience Required:




  • Bachelor's degree required in a related field. Degree in Nursing, Microbiology, Epidemiology, or a related discipline is preferred. Master's degree in Public Health or a related discipline preferred.
  • Requires a minimum 2 years of experience in Infection Prevention, nursing, clinical laboratory, epidemiology, public health, or related field.
  • Must be Certified in Infection Control (CIC) or possess the ability to become certified within two years of hire.


Salary Range: Minimum 34.48/hour - Maximum 56.86/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
