Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Part-Time Science Lab Coordinator II supports and manages laboratory materials, supplies, equipment, and laboratory experiences. This is accomplished through close coordination with the professors' lectures and a professional knowledge of the sciences. Primarily performs coordination duties characterized by facilitating the harmonious working of peers or colleagues toward the same end. Coordinators do not generally directly supervise staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists manager and faculty to create biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, and physics laboratory schedules
  2. Maintains inventory and quality assurance of all science lab items, including cataloguing and labeling of all lab materials
  3. Tracks and coordinates budget expenditures
  4. Prepares requisitions for the timely arrival of all lab-related materials under the direction of the manager
  5. Directs and monitors laboratory safety protocols
  6. Monitors regulated and bio-hazardous materials; directs the proper disposal of such materials
  7. Communicates with instructors regarding labs
  8. Analyzes and improves procedures and practices
  9. Assists manager in developing hygiene plan, maintaining Right to Know Centers, and MSDS
  10. Keeps current with new technologies and safety regulations
  11. Supervises student workers in laboratory preparations
  12. Maintains professional working relationships, both within the District and with outside vendors
  13. Networks with individuals in other divisions and departments
  14. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and/or experience with infection control policies and procedures and safety regulations (EPA, OSHA)
  • Proven astute and broad knowledge of the sciences and related safety protocols for the successful handling of day-to-day operations
  • Strong skills in the use of microcomputers and related word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum instruction and also cooperatively as a member of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to provide dynamic and proactive educational leadership
  • Proven effectiveness in allocating and managing resources
  • Physically capable of some heavy lifting and moving, some climbing, and moving rapidly through the lab rooms
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate power equipment and determine equipment usage
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work collaboratively
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the comprehensive community college
  • Demonstrated high-level communication and computer skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality service to students
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead change

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma and at least 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree

Hourly Pay Rate is $20.29
