How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As an Engineer I - Research and Development, you will provide engineering support for projects across multiple business units, assisting with the research, design, and development of new or improved products. Working under immediate to general supervision and following established procedures, you will perform assigned engineering tasks with work reviewed by more senior engineers.

This role involves developing creative solutions to challenging problems, collecting/analyzing data and making decisions on next steps. Tasks typically include research, planning, physical setup of tests, configuring instrumentation, operating equipment, analyzing data and documenting results.

This position also includes direct interaction with customers and sales personnel, participating in technical discussions, and conducting or demonstrating testing activities related to customer applications.

This role collaborates closely with engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, and cross-functional teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet project requirements, while supporting innovation, continuous improvement, and awareness of evolving technology and industry trends.

This role encourages innovation and continuously improves efficiency of technical support, monitors advances of technology and competition, and supports global and acquisition-related technical issues in areas of expertise.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

  1. Product Development, Testing & Technical Support
  • Support VAVE (Value Analysis/Value Engineering) initiatives and contribute to product improvements and technical solution development.
  • Execute and facilitate testing activities, including prototyping, setup, instrumentation, calibration, data collection, analysis, and documentation.
  • Develop and review test plans while assessing safety, feasibility, and resource requirements.
  • Maintain and enhance VBA test programs and support testing of coolingtower components and assemblies.
  1. Project, Vendor & Facility Coordination
  • Manage project testing tasks, schedules, and ontime delivery requirements.
  • Facilitate and control internal material orders (SAP/online vendors) and review vendorsupplied materials and services.
  • Support and maintain test equipment, instrumentation, test cells, and facility infrastructure, including electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and safety systems.
  • Participate in facilitywide initiatives such as safety, environmental compliance, training, and continuous improvement (5S, SOP development).
  1. Customer, Sales & CrossFunctional Interaction
  • Provide facility tours that support customer visits and sales initiatives.
  • Participate in technical discussions with customers, sales teams, and internal engineering groups.
  • Deliver demonstrations and training on product and component applications.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, interns, and crossfunctional teams to support successful testing and project outcomes.

What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (mechanical, civil, chemical, etc.)
  • Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) / Engineer in Training (EIT) Exam
  • Advanced degree a plus

Required Experience & Skills

  • 2-5 years of relevant engineering experience (or 1-3 years of engineering experience with an advanced degree)
  • Working knowledge of fundamental engineering principles and practices. (heat transfer, fluid dynamics, acoustics and vibration)
  • Proficiency with testing instrumentation, data acquisition and programming (VBA)
  • Familiarity with hydraulic, electrical and controls equipment.
  • Competency with hand tools and shop equipment: wood & metal fabrication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Project)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (oral, written)
  • Strong project planning and multi-tasking skills.

Ideal Experience & Skills

  • Exposure to HVAC, refrigeration, or industrial manufacturing environments
  • Experience supporting product design, testing, or design-for-manufacturability initiatives
  • Experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred) and engineering data management
  • Experience with solids-based CAD/CAM and 3D printing software.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional and geographically dispersed teams
  • Understanding of project coordination and multi-task execution

Travel & Working Environment

  • Hands-on test/research/fabrication/shop environment, Monday - Friday
  • The position may require working occasionally outside normal work hours
    • (Some nights/weekends due to situational test requirements)
  • Lifting up to 70 pounds
  • Bending and stooping
  • Working at heights less than 50 feet above ground
  • Work with exposure to bad weather and/or excessive heat
