Clinical Cytogeneticist

Laboratory Medicine, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco

Position Description:

The Department of Laboratory Medicine, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is actively seeking a full-time Clinical Cytogeneticist with clinical service and teaching responsibilities. This Assistant Director position is at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in either the HS Clinical, Clinical X, or In Residence career tracks at UCSF, depending on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities include providing on-site clinical oversight of a comprehensive cytogenetics laboratory, which performs chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization, chromosomal microarray, optical genomic mapping, and next-generation sequencing for neoplastic and constitutional (prenatal and postnatal) specimens; signing out clinical cytogenetic cases on a daily basis; and serving as a consultant to physicians for all matters related to Cytogenetics test selection and result interpretation. Continuous development and implementation of new cytogenetic assays and technology platforms will be key components of this position. The successful candidate is expected to participate actively in genetics and pathology resident and fellow education.

Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to academic medicine, education, and collaborative clinical care, and will be expected to contribute to departmental and institutional service and leadership initiatives.

Required Qualifications:



  • MD, MD/PhD, or PhD and be an American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) - board certified or eligible in Clinical Cytogenetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics. Applicants who are board eligible must obtain board certification within two examination cycles as a condition of continued employment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential as the position requires active communication with clinicians and technical staff.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • California license in Clinical Cytogenetics and a minimum of two years of clinical cytogenetics laboratory experience are preferred.


The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $154,700-$405,900. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
