Multimedia Specialist - Part Time
Position Description The multimedia specialist designs content for media platforms in a manner that is clear, engaging, and meaningful to news consumers. The position promotes a favorable and consistent image of the department and the university for internal and external audiences. Davis College includes the departments of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education and Communications, Animal and Food Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Natural Resources Management, Plant and Soil Science, and Veterinary Sciences along with multiple research centers and institutes. The College has over 100 tenure-track faculty, 2747 undergraduate and 519 graduate students, numerous other staff employees, and generated approximately $16 million in extramural research funding.
The Department:
The PSS Department is a comprehensive academic unit conducting research and offering coursework and programs in several areas of plant and soil sciences. There are 36 full-time faculty members and a student body consisting of approximately 180 undergraduate and 140 graduate students. B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. level degrees are offered in Plant and Soil Science. Additionally, distance education courses and four certificate programs are offered. The department is research-intensive, while fostering strong teaching expectations and commitments. Students in the department are educated to meet the challenge of using soil, water, and plant resources for sustainable production and environmental quality. Major/Essential Functions The Multimedia Specialist will support the Institute of Genomics for Crop Abiotic Stress Tolerance (IGCAST) by developing and implementing communication strategies that enhance the institute's visibility within and beyond the university. This position is responsible for content creation, event promotion, and public engagement through print, digital, and social media. The Multimedia Specialist reports directly to the Director of IGCAST.
- Design, develop, and publish engaging content for IGCAST's website, newsletters, and social media platforms.
- Write and edit news stories and features highlighting faculty research, new publications, and grant awards.
- Produce short videos and multimedia content to communicate IGCAST discoveries and technologies to general audiences.
- Design, compile, and produce the annual IGCAST report and periodic newsletters summarizing key accomplishments and activities.
- Promote and document IGCAST seminars, invited lectures, and the annual IGCAST symposium.
- Assist with event planning, including scheduling, reserving suitable venues, and arranging travel and lodging for invited speakers.
- Support event logistics, including photography, publicity, and coordination with university communication offices.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of IGCAST's visual identity and communication strategy.
- Assist with preparing promotional and informational materials for internal and external audiences.
- Perform other communications and outreach-related duties as assigned by the Director of IGCAST.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of plant biology or related life sciences is essential to effectively communicate scientific research.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities efficiently.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field plus one year related experience; OR a combination of related education and/or experience to equal five years. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in academic, research, or scientific communication, particularly in the life sciences or agriculture. Experience in producing newsletters, annual reports, or promotional materials.
- Familiarity with event planning and coordination within a university or research setting.
