What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineering within the Interconnects Department. You will design, develop, and evaluate engineering solutions for complex electromechanical components. Your responsibilities will include producing detailed design documentation, specifying materials, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure successful product deployment. You will apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure designs are manufacturable and inspectable. This position is suited for self-motivated individuals who excel in fast-paced environments and are dedicated to delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems for implementing and integrating engineering solutions and developing requirements
  • Produce designs, models, and product definition of complex objects
  • Determines product requirements based on user needs
  • Use CAD application software to develop electrical or mechanical design concepts
  • Create the design definition documentation utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) ensuring that the design can be effectively manufactured and inspected
  • Specifies materials, equipment, and supplies required to complete product development and may evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services
  • Establish and review design methods and procedures and prepare design specifications, analyses, and recommendations for presentation and approval
  • May provide the necessary documentation to successfully deploy the product in the field.
  • Some travel may be required
  • Interface with stakeholders/customers

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Experience working with Creo CAD software
  • Knowledge and background in a scientific or engineering discipline
  • Direct experience in design and development of electromechanical components
  • Experience with the successful development, qualification, and delivery of nuclear weapon electronic components
  • Self-motivated, positive individual comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to own complex technical tasks
  • Experience with System engineering, requirement maturation, and requirement negotiation
  • Experience with the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including experience with drawing and authorization system PRIME and PDMLink, product development and qualification, testing and evaluation, and modeling and simulation
  • Demonstrated experience in fixturing and testing in a laboratory environment
  • Ability to work closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities
  • Good understanding of the customers, the concept of operations for the system, and the mission capabilities and characteristics of Interconnects work at Sandia
About Our Team

The Interconnects Department designs develops tests and qualifies high voltage, RF, flat-flex, multi-wire, and fiber optic cable assemblies. We utilize the Realize Product Subsystem (RPSS) to develop Mark Quality product that covers the complete product realization cycle of requirements, design, development, specification, qualification, procurement, delivery and stockpile support through our partners at the National Security Campus (NSC).

We employ defect-prevention strategies to gain an understanding of design margin during the development cycle. The departments capabilities include the ability to address multiple challenging requirements related to meeting high reliability numbers over extremely long life, radiation tolerance, nuclear safety requirements, and size & weight restrictions.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
