Data Engineer

Join Life Cycle Engineering in support of the NCIS IT support services mission headquartered in Quantico, Virginia. The Information Technology Directorate (ITD) supports the NCIS core mission areas to investigate and defeat criminal, terrorist, and foreign intelligence threats by planning for and providing services through appropriate use of the people, equipment, technology, and infrastructure resources of the United States (U.S.) Navy and Marine Corps.

Position Summary:

As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for transforming data into a format that can be easily analyzed by developing, maintaining, and testing infrastructures for data generation. You will collaborate closely with data scientists and data architects to provide solutions and enable data-driven decision-making by collecting, transforming, and publishing data.

Clearance Requirements:

Must have an active DoD Top Secret Clearance.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, operationalize, secure, and monitor data processing systems with particular emphasis on security and compliance; capability and efficiency; reliability and fidelity; and flexibility and portability/mobility.
  • Facilitate data collection and cleaning with some basic analytical skills. Primary drafter and editor of organizational data-related policy.
  • Ability to leverage, deploy, and continuously train pre-existing machine learning models.
  • Ability to design data processing systems, build and operationalize data processing systems, operate machine learning models and ensure solution quality.
  • Managing data pipelines and driving automation through effective metadata management.


Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data management, information systems, information science or a related quantitative field [or equivalent work experience] is required.
  • An advanced degree in computer science (MS), statistics, applied mathematics (Ph.D.), information science (MIS), data management, information systems, information science (post-graduation diploma or related) or a related quantitative field [or equivalent work experience] is preferred.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in IT, with at least six (6) years or more of work experience in data management disciplines including [data integration, modeling, optimization and data quality], and/or other areas directly relevant to data engineering responsibilities and tasks.
  • Strong experience with advanced analytics tools for Object-oriented/object function scripting using languages such as R, Python, Java, and C++.
  • Strong ability to design, build and manage data pipelines for data structures encompassing data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata and workload management.
  • The ability to work with both IT and business in integrating analytics and data science output into business processes and workflows.
  • Strong experience with popular database programming languages including SQL and PL/SQL for relational databases and certifications on upcoming NoSQL/Hadoop oriented databases like MongoDB.



Physical Demands and Expectations:

  • Travel will be required to support this task (up to 25% travel)
  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing; occasional prolonged sitting
  • Ability to speak, read, hear and write, with or without assistance
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment
