Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking an experienced and detail-orientedSenior Technology Engineer with emphasis on database administration skills and experience. As a member of the Applicationsdepartment within the Information Technology Division (ITD), this role is ideal for a candidate who thrives in a dynamic environment and has a strong track record of managing, optimizing, and securing enterprise-level databases.

Reporting to a group manager within the ITD Applications department, the DBA will support multiple development and production environments across bothMicrosoft SQL Server and Oracledatabase platforms. Broad responsibilities include managing database performance, ensuring data integrity and availability, and collaborating with software development teams to support application needs. The DBA will also contribute to strategic planning and execution of database and application-related projects and modernization initiatives.

ITD Mission

Brookhaven Lab's Information Technology Division's (ITD) mission is to deliver safe, efficient operations that ensure the delivery of the Lab's research mission by:

  • Developing and deploying state-of-the-art information and computing systems in support of scientific research and business operations
  • Providing a reliable and secure, high-speed network infrastructure for scientific and business computing
  • Developing a scientific computing infrastructure that can support the computing needs that are common among the scientific departments
  • Providing support to scientific and administrative programs to help them address their unique computing problems
  • Providing a cost-effective, highly reliable, secure, and standardized computing infrastructure
  • Promoting best practices in the areas of platform support, application development, and customer service
  • Providing cost-effective information services to the Brookhaven Lab community including Research Library, publications, records management, and technical editing services, in support of the research mission and in compliance with contractual requirements

ITD includes experts in information technology (IT) infrastructure and operations, cyber security, business systems, data information, and information services, including records management and the Research Library. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who is resourceful and innovative, and who understands that collaboration with stakeholders from across the Laboratory is critical to ensure the right expertise and technology are in place to advance our mission of bringing science solutions to the world.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administer, monitor, and maintainSQL Server and Oracledatabases in development, test, and production environments
  • Perform installation, configuration, tuning, security hardening, capacity planning, and performance optimization of databases in conjunction with application developers and vendors
  • Implement and maintain database backup and recovery strategies
  • Collaborate with application developers to design and optimize database schemas, queries, and stored procedures
  • Collaborate with application developers and vendors on debugging, performance management, and scalability issues
  • Support data integration and migration efforts across multiple systems
  • Implement strategies to ensure high system availability and redundancy, including disaster recovery testing and readiness
  • Act as a strategic leader for database and data management technologies, providing technical insight and guidance to senior leaders and team members
  • Maintain strong documentation practices, including database configuration, procedures, and standards
  • Stay current with emerging database technologies and best practices
  • Participate in audits and compliance reviews as needed

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience on a basis of 2:1)
  • 8+ years of relevant experiencein database administration
  • Proven experience withMicrosoft SQL ServerandOracledatabase management and administration
  • Strong understanding of database architecture, indexing, and performance tuning
  • Experience with backup and recovery tools
  • Proficiency in writing and optimizing SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers
  • Experience with database monitoring tools and automation scripts
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and documentation abilities
  • Strong time management and project organization skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications such asMicrosoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate,Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), or equivalent
  • Experience withcloud-based database services(e.g., Microsoft Azure SQL, Oracle Cloud)
  • Experience supporting enterprise applications and integrations
  • Experience usingAzure DevOpsfor collaboration, work tracking, and deployment pipelines
  • Exposure to Agile methodologies

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $109150 - $182000/year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
