The Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) Technologist serves as an integral member of the patient care team within the department, collaborating effectively with other team members to ensure continuity of care for patients. The PFT Technologist consistently upholds a philosophy of patient- and family-centered care in all interactions with patients, families, and hospital personnel, prioritizing the understanding and fulfillment of customer needs. This position provides valuable direct patient care experience for individuals interested in pursuing advanced education in the medical field, including medicine, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner programs.

  • Guide patients through diagnostic pulmonary evaluations, including:
  • Spirometry with pre- and post-bronchodilator assessments
  • Body plethysmography
  • Diffusing capacity (DLCO)
  • Oximetry at rest and/or during exercise
  • Perform maintenance and calibration on a variety of pulmonary function testing (PFT) equipment.
  • Support the technical training and onboarding of newly hired technologists.
  • Maintain annual competencies in relevant technical skills.
  • Report and contribute to troubleshooting for equipment or software maintenance and performance concerns.
  • Ensure testing areas are adequately stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and maintain competencies in point-of-care testing.
  • Uphold cleanliness and safety protocols in all testing environments.
  • Adhere to all hospital infection control policies and procedures.
  • Accurately document testing information in ComPAS and Epic systems.
  • Actively participate in regular meetings and continuing education sessions.
  • Foster a respectful and patient-centered environment of care.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Approximately 1 month of training to be completed in our main Boston lab, followed by a primary work location at MGH Waltham. Willingness to cover in either location a plus.

Education

High School diploma or GED required; BS or BA in Science preferred.

Qualifications

Strong interpersonal and communication skills for teamwork and patient interaction, including emergencies.

Effective relations with department and hospital staff required.

Strong analytical and organizational skills for multiple diagnostics.

Paid training of four to twelve weeks based on experience.

Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing department pace.

Promote a customer/patient-focused approach among staff.

Independent judgment, creativity, and initiative needed during patient procedures.

Ability to work under stress.

Competent in operating equipment and information systems.

Physically able to lift linen, supplies, patients, etc.

Adhere to department safety standards.

Able to work with adult, elderly, and critically ill patients; productive in emergencies and on-call situations.

Maintain professionalism at all times.

Demonstrate technical and interpersonal proficiency as set by PFT lab leadership after training.
