Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load. Cogeneration Systems is part of UNC Energy Services.
Position Summary
This position will learn the skill set required to assist the Shift Supervisor (SS), Control Room Operator ( CRO) and Assistant Control Room Operator ( ACRO) in the operation of all plant components, equipment and systems in complex steam and electric generating facilities (Cogeneration Facility, Manning Drive Steam Plant and Landfill Gas) to ensure that they operate safely and reliably. This position will assist the SS, CRO, ACRO and AO in the operation of two circulating fluidized bed boilers, three natural gas/oil package boilers and all associated balance of plant auxiliary equipment at the Cogeneration Facility and Manning Drive Steam Plant. This position will develop the responsibility for the daily inspection of the operating equipment for proper valve alignment, lubrication and equipment operating condition detected at the actual equipment in the field. The auxiliary equipment consists of steam turbine generator, fans, pumps, piping systems, valves, control valves, tanks, mills, steam straps, cooling tower, condensers, fluid drives, heat exchangers, air compressors, water treatment systems, bag houses, fuel oil storage, etc. This position will gain an understanding of said systems, equipment and components. The operating practices will ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of these multi-million dollar facilities. This position communicates with the appropriate personnel to ensure that all malfunctions are corrected in order to maintain continuous steam and electric service to the customers of the facilities. The incumbent in this position will develop a skill level which will allow for growth opportunities throughout the Operations group. This position assists in the facility security during non-business hours and weekends 24/7
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires certification(s).
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Valid NC Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preferred candidate will have DCS, CEMS training or boiler/industrial plant operating experience, working knowledge of personal computers and associated software applications and experience with with a work management system (for example MAXIMO).
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
The environmental conditions range from an air conditioned and heated control room to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions at various lengths of time depending on the need or operational requirements. This position will be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE in accordance with established procedures. Physical effort required for this position includes, but is not limited to: climb stairs/ladders, ability to move 50+ pounds and the ability to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus ( SCBA). Part of the equipment is located outdoors and operation and/or maintenance are required year round. Duties to be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
