Position Summary
The primary location of this position is on-site in Cullowhee, NC.

The Western Carolina University Print Shop is seeking a Pre-Production Specialist who will assist with project intake, job traffic management, and file preparation. This position required to operate, troubleshoot and maintain the laser engraver and CNC router/engraver.


The WCU Print Shop is a full-service, commercial printer operating on the campus and at the service of Western Carolina University. Its work includes quick copy service, high volume digital printing, wide format printing, awards and promotional products, engraving, and direct mail fulfillment. The Pre-Production Specialist will work in each of these areas. Time will be split between the daily operation of production-level digital printers; preparing files for our presses, wide format plotters, digital devices and engraver; and preparing and delivering proofs for clients.


A working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite graphic design software, an excellent eye for detail and color consistency, and an ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, high-volume environment is essential. This position reports to the Print Shop's Digital Production Manager.

Generalized Job Duties Include:

  • Taking artwork from University Marketing and all university customers and preparing for print including adding die-lines, setting up files correctly for paper size and imposition, and converting to appropriate file types when necessary.
  • This position required to operate, troubleshoot and maintain the laser engraver and CNC router/engraver, needs extensive knowledge of graphic design software.
  • Work with Print Shop Manager to ensure all jobs meet client delivery deadlines and that appropriate timelines are communicated with customers.
  • Check proofs for bleeds, color, fonts, and resolution.


Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (including: InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator)
  • Demonstrated experience with customer service and a professional phone presence.
  • Experience with a laser engraver, CNC router/engraver, or equivalent hardware.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete multiple assignments within a given time frame.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
