Overview

Substation Operations (Northern Operations) is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to supervise Substation Operations personnel in the operation of substation facilities for the electric transmission and distribution systems. The successful candidate must possess a high regard for personal accountability and understand the importance of commitment to excellence. The successful candidate also must demonstrate a high energy level and promote a positive work ethic in support of our corporate values as well as provide strong customer support.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Supervises Operators (Senior Substation Operators, Assistant Substation Operators, GUWs, etc) in the operation of substation equipment, and supervises field personnel in work activities, coaching, scheduling, training and safety discussions.
  • As needed, supervises mechanics, engineering inspectors and subordinate titled personnel in the maintenance, construction, repair and inspection of substations and associated substation equipment and structures.
  • Orders, coordinates and ensures availability and timely delivery of materials, supplies and equipment, and certifies accounts for and approves expenditures for labor, material, petty cash, supplies and equipment within prescribed limits.
  • Interfaces with various Con Edison departments and personnel who enter our substations, such as Electric Operations, Transmission Operations and Central Engineering, and attend daily management meetings to report job progress, be fully knowledgeable of work scopes and submit Work Permit Requests in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ensures that the operation, maintenance, repair and inspection of transmission and area substations equipment and structures are performed in compliance with operating procedures, and that station compliance items and equipment PMs are completed on time per department procedures and specifications.
  • Works with the Field Planners and Central Planning group to improve work plans and provide feedback to planners on work plans, and assign personnel to jobs in accordance with the Weekly Work Schedule and station schedule.
  • Ensures personnel comply with all company and departmental rules and regulations, and enforces Company procedures such as Equal Employment Opportunity, substance abuse, discipline and security.
  • Ensures that all Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) work practices are followed and work is done in accordance with Company policy and governmental regulations, including conducting environmental, health and safety lectures.
  • Conducts On-the-Job training (OJT), effective job briefings and documented job site safety exchanges, and for enforcing good housekeeping and safe job setups.
  • Ensures that all personnel, tools and material are safely and effectively utilized, that Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools are incorporated in daily activities, and that leadership fosters a Zero Accident Culture, diversity and inclusion, operational excellence and effective cost management.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the Way We Work Principles, adherence to the Companys Standards of Business Conduct and other Company procedures and must be able to perform other related tasks and assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years related work experience 2 years of experience in operations, maintenance or construction of power generation, transmission or distribution equipment or equivalent education/experience is required. or
  • Associate's Degree and 3 years related work experience 3 years of experience in operations, maintenance or construction of power generation, transmission or distribution equipment or
  • High School Diploma/GED and 5 years related work experience 5 years of experience or more in operations, maintenance or construction of power generation, transmission or distribution equipment.

Relevant Work Experience
  • Work experience in the operation, maintenance, or construction of power generation, transmission, and distribution equipment, required.
  • Computer Skills including Microsoft Office programs, Maximo/DataSplice, Engage/ePlan, required.
  • Exercise independent judgement and able to render sound business decisions, required.
  • Be detailed oriented, able to work under pressure and handle multiple concurrent assignments, required.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, good presentation skills and ability to effectively interact with both internal and external customers, support staff, and various levels of management and union, required.

  • Must be computer literate and be able to apply practical applications in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and work management systems such as Maximo, Engage and OSS, required.
  • Supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Technical experience or working knowledge in the operation, maintenance, construction, inspection, and repair of the electrical transmission and distribution system to include: substation operations, switchgear installation, grounding practices, circuit breaker mechanics, and electrical distribution transformers, preferred.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
  • Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
