About the Position

Johns Hopkins Health System is seeking an experienced and dedicated Public Safety Sergeant to support our mission of maintaining a safe, secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff. This leadership role oversees security officers and daily operations, ensuring professionalism, accountability, and exceptional service across the healthcare facility.


Key Responsibilities


  • Supervise, mentor, and support public safety officers



  • Oversee patrols, access control, surveillance monitoring, and emergency response



  • Conduct inspections of security equipment and facilities



  • Respond to incidents and coordinate an effective, disciplined response



  • Lead security-related investigations and prepare detailed reports



  • Serve as liaison with internal departments and outside agencies



  • Assist in training programs, drills, and officer development



  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to security systems and protocols



  • Foster a culture of safety, integrity, and professionalism




Minimum Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's Degree in criminal justice/security preferred)



  • Minimum 5 years of experience in security, law enforcement, or military



  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities



  • Proficiency with surveillance systems, access control, and incident reporting software



  • Physical ability to patrol, respond, restrain when necessary, and lift 50 lbs



  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime




Required Licenses & Certifications


  • Valid driver's license



  • IAHSS Supervisor Level Certification (or obtained within required timeframe)



  • CPR, de-escalation, Stop the Bleed, Narcan training (post-hire)



  • State-specific security licensing requirements:




    • Maryland: Must obtain MD Security Guard license within 90 days






Preferred Qualifications


  • Specialized training in emergency response, crisis intervention, or healthcare security



  • Experience conducting investigations and coordinating emergency response




Working Conditions


  • Prolonged standing/walking; occasional running



  • Ability to climb stairs and physically restrain individuals as part of a team



  • Exposure to temperature changes, noise, and other environmental factors




Salary Range: Minimum 26.12/hour - Maximum 43.11/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
