Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Procurement, the Life Sciences Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager is part of the Supply Chain Management Division's Strategic Sourcing unit. Responsible for leading University-wide strategic Life Sciences initiatives including creating an approved supplier base, implementing best-in-class strategic supplier relationships, creating agreements through negotiations and public solicitations to leverage annual procurement volume, ensuring that strategically sourced contracts provide tangible benefits to the University. In addition, this individual will participate in Life Sciences system-wide initiatives representing UC Davis incorporating campus requirements.

The individual in this position: (1) possesses advanced knowledge associated with the professional field of sourcing; (2) has in-depth knowledge of the Life Science industry, trends, and key considerations of contracting for Life Science goods and services (3) applies associated theories, methods, principles, and practices; (4) performs associated duties that are predominantly intellectual and varied in nature, requiring creative, analytical, evaluative, interpretive, and/or critical thinking; and (5) exercises discretion and independent judgment, requiring only general supervision for day-to-day tasks. The role will also assist in identifying opportunities for savings, standardization, and efficiencies while remaining flexible to evolving technologies, such as AI and automation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field with 5+ years of progressive work experience in Life Science contracting and negotiations, strategic sourcing, and supply chain management experience in a large diverse strategic procurement environment (or equivalent combination of education/experience).
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and of opportunity assessments including, but not limited to, spend analysis, cost analysis, risk analysis, and market analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing supplier relationships (SRM).
  • Demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional teams including organization skills, meeting facilitation and decision making.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Life Sciences industry, trends, needs analysis and requirements, for the purpose of identifying and evaluating appropriate solutions and/or vendors.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communications; listening skills to accurately interpret what others are saying, ability to articulate goals, strategies, and direction.
  • Demonstrated expertise in structuring and leading complex negotiations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional purchasing certification such as C.P.M. or C.P.S.M.
  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Business, Supply Chain Management, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive work experience in Life Sciences related procurement, strategic sourcing, and supply chain management experience in a large environment.
  • Extensive experience with total cost and related financial analytical techniques.
  • Extensive experience with data management tools and reporting.
  • Experience in a higher education procurement environment, demonstrating familiarity with procurement, small business, strategic sourcing; and the policies, regulations, and issues faced by research institutions of higher education.
  • Proven project management skills, including the ability to set project objectives, determine and address potential barriers; identify required resources/sources, identify process steps and milestones; and adjust action plans to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Familiarity with Environmentally Preferable Purchasing, life cycle cost analysis and the incorporation of sustainability measures in supply management.

Department Overview

Accounting & Financial Services encompasses approximately 200 career staff & periodic contract, student or temporary staff with an annual operating budget of $23.1M. Funding includes state, endowment opportunity, indirect cost return, reserves, summer sessions, service enterprises, educational sales & service, & self-supporting activity.

Contracting Services, as a division of Accounting & Financial Services, generates incentives and revenues of different types for the University. Patronage, prompt pay, and other incentives are driven by the use of contracts (including UC system-wide and UCD local strategic sourcing agreements, and consortium agreements) negotiated and/or managed by the Contracting Services Strategic Sourcing unit.
