Under the general supervision of the Department Administrator, the Departmental Accountant provides complex financial support services and accounting management for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UW-Madison. The Accountant is responsible for working with Department leadership to manage 101 and 131 funding including budget analysis, expenditure tracking, and financial reporting. The position is also responsible for providing oversight and advising on other non-sponsored funds including WFAA, UW Trust Fund, scholarship, and 135, 136, and 150 funds. This position requires a strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards in addition to campus policies and procedures. The Accountant plays an integral part in developing policies, procedures, and controls for the successful financial management, forecasting, and reporting of department funds. This position audits and approves purchases and travel transactions. As such, the Accountant is responsible for providing some training to and oversight of purchasing card holders and reimbursement approvers. Applicants for this position will be considered for Accountant I and Accountant II titles. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments
  • Assists in preparing budgets and financial projections
  • Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
  • Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
  • Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements basic solutions as needed
  • Organizes, prepares, and updates basic financial statements, monthly and year-end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions

Compensation:

The starting salary for this position is $60,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in accounting, finance, or related role.
  • Knowledge and application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and theories.
  • Experience working with complex automated accounting systems and processes.
  • Solid skills with software programs such as Excel and other Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in accounting, finance, or related role.
  • Familiarity with financial transaction and reporting systems (e.g., Workday).
  • General knowledge of University and State financial policies, regulations, and processes.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and oral/written communications skills.
  • Well-developed analytical, organizational, and time management skills with a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail.

Education:

Bachelor's degree preferred
