Organizational Unit Overview
The organizational unit is the Division of Academic Affairs of the Department of Public Health at the Brody School of Medicine. Our Department of Public Health is committed to educating professionals and conducting research to improve the health of communities in our region and beyond. This mission aligns with the Brody School of Medicine's mission to improve the health and well-being of the region. We practice a combination of science and social approaches to reduce disease and systematically address the multiple determinants of health. Our work is rooted in strong partnerships with the community, health and social services, industry and business, and academia.
The evidence-based study and practice of Public Health have never been more important as our region, state, nation, and world face significant health challenges. The mission and vision of the Department of Public Health in the Brody School of Medicine are to promote the health and well-being of communities across North Carolina and beyond through innovative education, research, and service.
Our five guiding principles are to provide accessible stakeholder-informed learning opportunities, conduct applied and impactful research, serve communities through collaboration, advance the health in rural populations, and develop professionals who adapt to meet current challenges. Learning opportunities of the department include:

  • Two online Certificate programs
  • The Master of Public Health degree program with three concentrations (which can be completed online)
  • Two doctoral degrees: the DrPH programs in Health Policy, Administration, and Leadership and Environmental and Occupational Health.



Public Health is collaborative in research and service, and works with local, regional, state, and national public health and health care agencies, and works closely with and is guided by an interdisciplinary group of Community Advisory Board members who lend their expertise to help us achieve program goals.
Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to act as administrative support for the faculty and staff in the Department of Public Health. The position will be responsible for interpreting and carrying out State, University, and Departmental policies and procedures. The primary functions for this position are to provide administrative support for the departmental chair and the Business Service Coordinator.

The administration team works together to meet the needs of the department. The following job duties include:


  • 30% Information/Records and Administration: This position is the primary point of contact for welcoming and triaging on-site visitors and for general phone calls to the department. Completes and compiles the documentation for student Applied Practicum Experiences (internships), including placement forms and affiliate agreements. Serves as a resource to the department to track/renew these agreements. Completes, maintains, and submits annual equipment inventory records for the department. Managing inventory includes a surplus of unneeded items throughout the department and maintaining records of computers due for replacement or service.

  • 20% Problem Solving: Handles day-to-day needs in the office, resolving basic issues as they arise and reaching out to the supervisor when needed. This includes submitting work orders and IT tickets for the department and communicating with various ECU or external vendors such as Moving Services, Recycling, Copier services, Facility services, Parking, etc.

  • 15% Scheduling and Dept Chair/faculty administrative support: Responsible for managing the chairperson's calendar, scheduling annual faculty evaluations, and supporting administrative tasks such as mailings, correspondence, tracking faculty appointments/annual reports, and completing meeting minutes. This position also schedules departmental meetings, community stakeholders' meetings, and other department-related events. This includes using ECU's system 25 Live to make reservations and utilizing Outlook to schedule virtual events via TEAMS, Zoom, or Webex.

  • 15% Event Management: Manages all aspects of departmental events with the assistance of the administration team. This includes ordering food, printing materials, ensuring proper room/AV set-up, managing parking passes and directions, and communicating all needed details to attendees and team members for a successful event.

  • 15% Purchasing: Responsible for purchasing all general (not research-related) supplies and materials for the department using Pro Card and/or ECU procurement systems. This includes office supplies, computer equipment, furniture, membership renewals, food/supplies for events, and any other needed supplies. Responsibility includes maintaining appropriate documentation and timely reconciliation of charges in the appropriate ECU system (e.g., Emburse).

  • 5% Website coordination: Serves as the primary, central contact for updates and changes to the department website. This includes submitting change requests as IT tickets, periodic review of the site for errors, working with the identified faculty member responsible for the web content, and seeking updates when needed from staff or faculty (e.g., updated student manuals annually, updated CVs for faculty information).
