I. JOB OVERVIEW






Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University's Division for Student Affairs is seeking a dynamic and visionary Assistant Director of Involvement and Leadership. This critical role is responsible for the strategic direction, development, and assessment of comprehensive student leadership programming and involvement opportunities for a diverse student body.

The Student Involvement team is fundamentally committed to leadership, community, advising, and departmental excellence. We strive to serve not only our students but also each other as colleagues. This position serves as an active member of the Division for Student Affairs, participating in special events, representing the Division at university-wide functions, and serving on university committees as assigned.

A primary focus of this position will be to envision, design, and launch a new student leadership framework that encourages continuous growth and development, moving students through scaffolded experiences from initial involvement to advanced leadership practice. The Assistant Director serves as a key administrator in the Office of Student Life, fostering a robust culture of community building, advising excellence, and student success.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Leadership Development & Framework Design

  • Develop and Implement Leadership Framework:
  • Lead the creation, implementation, and rigorous assessment of a comprehensive strategy for student leadership development. This includes developing and assessing a comprehensive strategy focused on cultivating citizen leaders and caretakers of democracy who think globally, communicate effectively, and are prepared to thrive in the 21st century. Programs must prioritize professional development, experiential learning opportunities, emotional intelligence, and civil discourse(including empathy, tolerance, and respect for differences).This also involves evaluating current offerings and proposing innovative new initiatives that meet the evolving needs of the diverse GW student community.


Program Oversight:
  • Lead the development, assessment, and implementation of programs and initiatives related to leadership development and community building, directly linking them to the new leadership framework and University-wide strategic objectives.
Research and Trends:
  • Research and engage in learning opportunities that track national trends and best practices surrounding student involvement and leadership programs to ensure departmental excellence and innovation.
Student Organization Management and Advising
  • Student Organization Oversight: Support the oversight of GW's 500+ student organizations, help managing policies, resources, travel, finances, and event processes.
Training and Support:
  • Lead the creation and delivery of effective officer training and professional development resources for student organization leaders. Train and support staff and faculty who serve as organizational advisors.
Direct Advising:
  • Directly advise a portfolio of recognized student organizations.
Supervision, Operations, and Administration
  • Staff Management: Supervise a team that may include full-time Program Coordinators, graduate students (year-round), undergraduate student coordinators, and student volunteers.
Policy and Compliance:
  • Contribute to policy development and enforcement to ensure compliance with university and relevant national standards.
Budgeting and Reporting:
  • Prepare and track budgets for assigned areas and conduct necessary record maintenance and reporting.
Communication Strategy:
  • Lead internal and external communication efforts, including long-term strategic communication and targeted marketing campaigns to actively promote involvement in leadership programs and student organizations to a diverse audience.
Partnership Building:
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships both within the Division for Student Affairs and across the university to enhance the student experience and ensure the execution of innovative programs
Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in higher education administration, counseling, or related field.
  • Experience designing, facilitating and overseeing leadership programming. Awareness of relevant leadership development theories and models.
  • Progressively responsible higher education administration experience to include a minimum of two years full-time experience within a student affairs department.
  • Previous experience in the recruitment, selection and supervision of full time, graduate, and student staff.
  • Previous experience with program design, management, implementation, assessment and analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Flexibility and a positive attitude.
  • Proficiency with personal computers, newsletter software, program marketing, and the use of database software.


Hiring Range $63,661.38 - $92,203.30
