About the role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Shift Supervisor is responsible for direct charge and control of facility operations during an assigned shift. This position prioritizes, directs, assists, and supervises the work activities of all assigned personnel with the direction and support of the Operations Manager.

Supervisory & Operational Functions

  • Understands and consistently observes all Company policies and procedures.
  • Supervises, directs, and coordinates work activities of shift operations personnel.
  • Monitors the entire facility during the assigned shift and initiates prompt corrective action to resolve problem areas.
  • Issue work orders for equipment repair or maintenance.
  • Directs shift personnel to achieve safe and efficient operation of all equipment consistent with Company policies and procedures to achieve production goals.
  • Maximizes the throughput of municipal solid waste burned and steam generated.
  • Notifies Operations Manager of any operational changes and abnormalities or problem areas that are critical to plant condition. Maintains appropriate records of facility operations.
  • Periodically conducts rounds in the plant; remains available to assist and/or train operational employees in their tasks.
  • Ensures safe, appropriate actions during emergencies.
  • Ensures facility is operating in accordance with CT DEEP guidelines. Coordinates with and informs Environmental Specialists of concerns or problems.
  • Assists in coordinating tests or trials of plant systems.
  • Communicates operational status of the facility and problem areas with the relieving Shift Supervisor at shift turnover.
  • Provides assistance during plant emergencies in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
  • As directed by the Operations Manager and/or the Facility Manager, this individual will have overall plant responsibility in the absence of such personnel.
  • Assists in planning, supervising, and providing hands-on operational support during facility outages (scheduled and unscheduled).
  • Required to work a rotating shift.

Health and Safety Functions

  • Ensures safe, efficient operations of the facility in accordance with Company policies and procedures, with a special emphasis on safety.
  • Reports unsafe acts or conditions to the Operations Manager and to the FSC
  • Ensures that shift personnel follow Company safety policies and procedures when performing job functions.
  • In coordination with the FSC, ensures that all site personnel have proper safety training in accordance with state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Undertakes action to correct upsets or emergencies that may occur within the facility.
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety and comply with all safety policies. Must report safety violations and potential safety violations per policy. Must maintain the facility in such a way as to ensure the safety of customers and other employees.
  • Applies good housekeeping practices in the performance of duties and/or projects.

Human Resources Functions

  • Consistently monitors the performance of shift personnel. Keeps notes on employees as needed to track performance levels that are above or below average.
  • Secures an environment where employees feel comfortable and empowered to communicate ideas, concerns, and suggestions to management.
  • Mentors employees and builds relationships that ensure teamwork, increased morale, and mutual respect.
  • Provides training and guidance to new and existing employees to ensure a thorough understanding of the Company's policies and procedures.
  • Engages in the Company's formal performance review process in a timely and objective manner.
  • In coordination with Human Resources Representative, initiates personnel changes such as hiring, terminating, disciplinary action, promotions, and transfers of shift personnel.

Other Job Functions

  • Completes all company-sponsored training courses required for this position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Collaborations

  • Takes work direction from the Operations Manager and/or the Facility Manager. The system interfaces with all levels of facility personnel.
  • Interfaces with outside vendors and subcontractors.
  • Interacts with other eco/sites as needed.
  • Interfaces with FSC, Human Resources Manager, Human Resources Representative, and other Corporate personnel.

Qualifications &Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Associate's Degree or technical school training in a related science or an equivalent technical degree is preferred.
  • Five to seven years of experience in industrial or utility boiler/power plant operations.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Strong leadership ability to effectively and efficiently supervise personnel, make informed decisions, and interact effectively with various levels of the organization.
  • Able to understand and interpret drawings, schematics, instruction booklets and training manuals pertinent to plant equipment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to accept and execute work orders.

Physical Demands

  • This position must be able to observe operations and effectively communicate with employees in all areas of the site.
  • Will be required to sustain physical activity indoors and outdoors with exposure to temperature changes, chemicals, odors and fumes.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb ladders and stairs, work on elevated surfaces (up to and possibly exceeding 25 feet high); push, pull, lift and move moderate to heavy objects up to and possibly exceeding 50 lbs. This individual will frequently have to use both hands and manipulate a wide range of tools and equipment.
  • Certain areas of the site operations might produce noise and other physical hazards that require the use of personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, hard hats, safety toed shoes, protective eye wear, hearing protection and respiratory equipment.
  • The ability to read and understand signs and instrumentation is critical to a safe and productive operation.
  • A post-offer physical exam requiring passing a pulmonary function test, background check and drug screen will be required.
