The Opportunity

This opportunity to join the Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Pediatrics is an exciting one. Columbia University Irving Medical Center, one of the nation's foremost academic health science center's working together with one of the nation's premier health systems, New York-Presbyterian Hospital. The desired candidate must be board certified/eligible in Pediatric Cardiology and will have completed an advanced fellowship in pediatric heart failure/transplantation.

The PACCT team consists of six heart failure/transplant cardiologists directed by Dr. Marc Richmond, four cardiac surgeons led by Dr. Emile Bacha, and a multi-disciplinary team that includes five nurse practitioners, two pharmacists, two social workers and nurse transplant and VAD coordinators. Begun in 1984, our transplant program has performed transplant in over 650 patients and currently averages approximately 20-25 transplants annually. In addition, we have an established MCS program led by Dr. Sabrina Law, offering the full complement of temporary and durable devices including Syncardia Total Artificial Heart. The program has recently provided MCS to approximately 15-20 patients per year, including bridge-to-transplant in complex CHD patients and destination VAD therapy. A close relationship with our surgical colleagues and adult VAD specialists offers a unique experience for novel approaches to VAD use. Our program consists of an established cardio-genetics clinic under the supervision of Dr. Teresa Lee, as well as multidisciplinary clinic for cardio-oncology, advanced Fontan care and Neuromuscular diseases; our center is an HCMA Center of Excellence for the care of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We have strong collaboration with our colleagues in ACHD and adult cardiomyopathy, heart failure and transplantation, participating in joint clinical conference and other opportunities.

Our team has two inpatient services, comanaging patients in the cardiac ICU and serve as the primary attending for our patients on the cardiac floor working with pediatric residents and nurse practitioners. We have several outpatient clinics throughout the week to manage patients with cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and transplant, located at MSCH and at a satellite clinic in Westchester County, NY

Key Responsibilites



  • The primary responsibility of this position will be as an academic clinical pediatric cardiologist specializing in heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and heart transplantation.
  • Provides all aspects of care and consultation, direct and indirect, to this complex patient population.
  • Engage in the interpretation of imaging, catheterization, laboratory medicine, pathology, physiological and scientific data in the field of heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and transplantation.
  • Maintain timely and complete EPIC chart notes, reports, and communication with primary care/referring physicians and other relevant subspecialty physicians.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinical management initiatives with other subsections within Pediatric Cardiology.
  • Participate in division and department quality improvement initiatives and curriculum development, including within the department.
  • Maintains varied hours on a rotated schedule with other physicians to ensure that there is always a physician on-call during non-business hours.
  • Attend patient rounds and complete consultation and inpatient notes. Comply with all billing, coding, documentation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in divisional conferences, Department of Pediatrics grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, and faculty development education.
  • Support cardiac clinical educational programs for nursing, medical students, residents, fellows, ancillary staff, and ARNPs, etc.
  • Serve as a role model to trainees, colleagues and staff, and provide behavioral based feedback to team members as needed.
  • Additional clinical responsibilities will include outpatient Cardiology coverage and 15-16 weeks inpatient service as well as conference preparation and on-call duties.
  • Academic advancement along an investigator, educational and/or applied health care tract is expected and supported depending on present rank.
