PUBLIC HEALTH DATA INTERN
DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for a Public Health Data Intern in the Division of Public Health. The position works on creating a comprehensive database compiled of data collected from Youth Health Surveys. Under the general direction of the Chief of Epidemiology, this position will collaborate with the Data, Research, Epidemiology and Innovation team to establish a plan on applicable and accessible data software to complete the project while ensuring data integrity, privacy and security.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:



  • Collaborate with the team to understand the history, purpose and use of the youth health survey.
  • Utilize statistical packages such as STATA, SAS, R, SPSS, or Microsoft Excel to analyze data.
  • Acquire proficiency at Power BI to build database for middle and high school youth health survey data.
  • Utilize health equity lens in data analyses.
  • Participate in all required intern activities that include attending a guest speaker session and presenting the final deliverables
  • Assist team with ad hoc data requests.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  • Strong understanding of public health and social determinants of health.
  • Proficiency in epidemiological data analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in data analysis packages such as SAS, R, STATA, or Power BI.
  • Interest in learning new skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent team building skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Understanding of the social determinants of health and health and racial equity to address health concerns across disease categories and conditions.
  • Regular onsite attendance is required


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Public Health, Epidemiology or other health data related science program
  • One (1) year of experience using data analysis and visualization software like Excel, STATA, and/or Power BI
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication skills


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's degree program in Public Health, Epidemiology or other health data related science programs
  • One (1) year of completed coursework in a Public Health, Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics or related program


SALARY: $15.00 hourly, part-time, non-benefitted.
