Job Summary

Supervises staff responsible for performing quality reviews and assessments for clinical documentation to ensure appropriateness of documentation in the medical record. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by which to attain them. Organizes and supervises the daily operations and departmental objectives in accordance with the overall strategic plan. Supports and oversees technical and administrative operations for clinical documentation as it relates to quality improvement. Accountable for the coordination of the staffing and material resources. Assists with the development and implementation of new programs, audits, education, and policies.

The Clinical Documentation Supervisor will be an expert in Clinical Documentation and will be part of the CDI leadership team. The CDI Supervisor will work closely with CDI leadership to develop processes for onboarding, continuous performance improvement, continuing education, and expertise related to audit and CDI improvement work. The CDI supervisor works with the CDI team and coding teams to ensure that documentation of discharge diagnoses and any co-existing co-morbidities is a complete reflection of the patient's clinical status and care. Works across the Health System to support and promote clinical documentation integrity education that spans the adult inpatient, pediatric inpatient (BCH-East Bay and West Bay), and ambulatory settings.

The Clinical Documentation Supervisor will have direct oversight for the Ambulatory Clinical Documentation Specialists, which will include data collection and assignments based on strategic priorities.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $118,300 - $268,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) is a team within the Department of Quality that reviews provider documentation and facilitates accurate representation of patients treated at UCSF Health. Through collaborative relationships with Faculty service lines, CDI supports best practices in clinical documentation integrity strategies with an emphasis on severity of illness, medical complexity and quality in the medical record. CDI closely follows Case Mix Index (CMI), risk adjusted outcomes and mortality ratings.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or other healthcare profession, or a combination of comparable clinical education and/or experience.
  • Five (5) years of directly related work experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of business software and specialized applications for data collection and analysis used by the CDI team.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise, coordinate, and prioritize the activities of subordinate staff, and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with clinical documentation.
  • Solid knowledge of medical record documentation coding, systems, and processes; understanding of conditions and diagnoses as they relate to reporting and reimbursement.
  • Solid knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document performance, and participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Detail-oriented, with solid analytical and critical thinking skills, and the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine the appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Solid interpersonal and communications skills and persuasiveness to collaborate effectively with diverse clinical, business, and technical personnel at all professional levels as well as with outside contacts and agencies.

Preferred Qualifications


  • RN license if a Registered Nurse
  • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS)
