Location: 100 W Lehigh Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19133

Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting, reporting, and compliance functions of the organization, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial information in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), funder requirements, and applicable regulatory standards. This role provides leadership to the Accounting Department, manages internal controls, and supports the CFO in strategic financial planning, audits, and board-level reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

* Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate preparation of financial statements.

* Maintain compliance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, HUD, and other regulatory/funder requirements.

* Prepare and present financial analyses, dashboards, and variance reports for senior management and the Board of Directors.

* Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes.

Accounting Operations

* Manage all general ledger functions, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll integration, fixed assets, and grants accounting.

* Ensure proper cost allocation among programs, departments, and funding sources.

* Oversee account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.

* Develop and maintain documented accounting policies and procedures.

Compliance & Audit

* Serve as primary contact for external auditors during annual financial statement and single audits.

* Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including HUD Section 8/202, Medicaid, and grantor requirements.

* Ensure timely filing of tax, grant, and funder financial reports.

* Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets.

Leadership & Supervision

* Direct, mentor, and evaluate accounting staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

* Collaborate with HR, Payroll, Purchasing, and Program leadership to ensure integrated financial workflows.

* Support professional development of the fiscal team.

Systems & Process Improvement

* Oversee accounting systems (Microsoft Dynamics GP, RealPage, Paylocity, etc.), ensuring efficiency and data integrity.

* Identify opportunities to automate processes and improve reporting capabilities.

* Lead system upgrades, implementations, and cross-departmental financial process initiatives.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years progressive accounting experience, including 3-5 years in a supervisory/management role.
  • Nonprofit, healthcare, or HUD housing accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, Uniform Guidance, and federal/state grant compliance.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (or similar ERP), RealPage, and payroll/HRIS systems preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
