Project Designer - San Francisco Studio At HDR, we believe that great design has the power to shape communities, advance innovation, and improve lives. As a Project Designer in our San Francisco architecture studio, you'll join a collaborative, design-driven team working on some of the Bay Area's most forward-thinking projects - from state-of-the-art science and technology campuses and next-generation healthcare environments to civic and cultural landmarks that reflect the spirit of the region. Our studio's recent portfolio includes:
- Cutting-edge life sciences and research facilities for leading biotech innovators in the Bay Area.
- Transformative academic and campus buildings at top Bay Area universities, designed to foster collaboration and discovery.
- Innovative civic and cultural spaces that strengthen community connections and elevate public experience.
- Next-generation healthcare environments that advance patient-centered care and redefine healing spaces.
What You'll Do:
- Take responsibility for design of architectural projects in collaboration with the Design Principal and multidisciplinary team - shaping the creative vision from early concept through construction.
- Explore and develop innovative design concepts and key components for complex, high-impact projects across science, education, civic, and healthcare sectors.
- Create compelling presentation materials and participate in client meetings, design critiques, and agency reviews.
- Ensure every design decision is grounded in code, cost, and constructability considerations, aligning creativity with project goals.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, and technical experts through all phases of design to deliver integrated solutions.
- Facilitate design charrettes and work sessions, bringing together diverse perspectives to refine and elevate project outcomes.
- Oversee team workflows and deliverables, maintaining design excellence and project momentum.
- Review and refine documentation to resolve design conflicts and uphold quality standards.
- Develop and edit specifications for key materials and systems, ensuring design intent is carried through construction.
- Support construction administration to help realize design vision on site.
- Mentor and guide junior designers, contributing to their growth and the studio's creative culture.
- Play a key role in shaping the design voice and culture of our San Francisco studio.
What We're Looking For:
- Able to demonstrate ability to undertake the above responsibilities.
- Master's degree in Architecture (or equivalent experience).
- Registered Architect preferred.
- Evidence of a good design understanding e.g. a good design portfolio
- Experience designing healthcare, higher education, civic, science, or research facilities.
- Proficiency in design and visualization tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhino, Enscape, V-Ray, Grasshopper, Lumion, SketchUp, and 3ds Max.
- Passion for sustainable and regenerative design (LEED experience preferred).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture or closely related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project Schedule).
- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in use of Autodesk Revit and familiarity with related tools and process.
- Demonstrated graphic presentation skills.
- Experience in preparation and layout of architectural contract. documents and specifications.
