THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is seeking an ambitious Fisheries Biologist 3 to lead the Huntsdale Species Restoration Unit. As the Unit Leader, you will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for the regional aquatic species restoration program. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Huntsdale Species Recovery Unit Leader oversees, coordinates, and provides technical guidance to advance a regional program to restore, recover, and propagate diadromous fishes, freshwater mussels, non-game fish, amphibians, reptiles, and other aquatic organisms; with focus on American Shad (AMS), threatened and endangered species, and Species of Greatest Conservation Need within these taxonomic groups. Work involves managing and coordinating AMS propagation efforts at the Huntsdale State Fish Hatchery as well as brood stock collections and monitoring surveys to assess recovery of rare species in the Susquehanna River, Potomac River, and Delaware River basins in Pennsylvania. You will have the opportunity to assist the Division Chief with establishing Recovery Unit performance objectives for management actions that are implemented, evaluate the progress to achieve the objectives, and define alternative approaches when objectives are not met.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. You may be required to respond to calls during irregular work hours.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. Telework schedule is dependent of time of year and operational needs of the unit. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Newville. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Fisheries Biologist 2, PFBC (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of professional experience conducting fish studies, fish investigations, or fish research and a bachelor's degree in a biological science that includes or is supplemented by 12 college credits in fish biology, fisheries management, fish population dynamics, ichthyology, limnology, fish ecology, aquatic ecology, watershed ecology and management, wetland ecology and management, herpetology, freshwater entomology, fish culture, fish physiology, fish pathology, biometrics, or other courses closely related to fisheries science or aquatic ecology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 12 college credits in fish biology, fisheries management, fish population dynamics, ichthyology, limnology, fish ecology, aquatic ecology, watershed ecology and management, wetland ecology and management, herpetology, freshwater entomology, fish culture, fish physiology, fish pathology, biometrics, or other courses closely related to fisheries science or aquatic ecology.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid driver's license.
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
