Posting Summary
The Department of History at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick invites applications for a full-time senior scholar in African American history. We seek applications from candidates specializing in any thematic area within the field of African American history. We are particularly interested in applicants whose work focuses on the long nineteenth and early twentieth century, and whose scholarship contributes to one or more of our program's strengths, including gender and sexuality, urban history, and the global Black freedom struggle. We also encourage applications from scholars whose research and teaching interests intersect with the university's initiatives in public history, law, and the environment. Candidates should have a distinguished record of publication, teaching, and service, and should be suitable for appointment with tenure at the rank of Full Professor or Distinguished Professor, though truly exceptional candidates at the rank of Associate Professor will be considered. Ph.D in History or related field is required.
Located in New Jersey, Rutgers' student body reflects the broad spectrum of backgrounds in the state. We are interested in hiring faculty who can contribute to our many communities through their research, teaching and/or service. The history department at Rutgers offers a top ranked graduate program, with #1 rankings in both African American and Women's History. The successful candidate will have a 2-2 course load, teach a range of African American history courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and will play a central role in our stellar graduate program. Rutgers also offers exciting centers and departments in Global Racial Justice, Africana Studies, Latino and Caribbean Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, which provide endless opportunities for collaboration.
Applicants should upload the following materials: a cover letter, addressed to Professor Leslie Alexander, Search Committee Chair; a CV; the names and e-mail addresses of three referees; and an article-length writing sample directly relevant to the candidate's expertise in African American history. The cover letter should include discussion of the candidate's research, teaching, and service, and should explain the candidate's training in and commitments to African American history.
