The Maintenance Assistant provides crucial support to the maintenance team by assisting with equipment repairs, facility maintenance, and general upkeep while developing skills toward becoming a qualified Electromechanical Technician. This role combines hands-on technical work with organizational responsibilities, including stockroom management and safety compliance, while supporting the overall operational efficiency of the facility. This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support maintenance technicians in equipment repairs, preventive maintenance activities, and troubleshooting while developing technical skills toward advancement

  • Perform basic facility maintenance including painting, minor electrical work, concrete repairs, and general building upkeep including landscaping and snow removal to maintain facility standards

  • Operate and maintain equipment including forklifts, scissor lifts, and floor scrubbers while following all safety protocols and procedures

  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules and maintain accurate documentation of completed work

  • Research and identify components/parts using technical manuals and catalogs, communicating effectively with vendors and suppliers

  • Maintain and organize tools, equipment, and work areas while ensuring proper care and storage of maintenance assets

  • Assist in managing and providing backup for stockroom operations, including inventory control of maintenance and janitorial supplies, receiving inbound items, and creating requisitions as needed

  • Execute Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and maintain safety inventories according to company policies and regulatory requirements

  • Perform basic troubleshooting and repairs under supervision while learning advanced maintenance skills through the potential Maintenance Apprentice Program

  • Support and implement Safety, Food Safety (GFSI), and 5S initiatives throughout the facility while ensuring compliance with corporate safety and sanitation policies

  • Commitment to continued education towards maintenance skills

  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION SCOPE:

Direction Received: Usually, direction comes from the Maintenance Supervisor/Manager. Direction can also come from Shift Supervisor as determined by production loss through equipment that is down.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS: (List and describe the minimum qualifications required to perform the job. Be sure to justify each skill with a corresponding essential function)

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Technical training or apprenticeship in machining preferred

  • 2-3 years experience in industrial machining a plus

  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs a plus

Required Experience:

  • Computer literacy (Word and Excel proficiency)

  • Basic mechanical abilities

  • Experience with hand and power tools

  • Knowledge of basic measuring tools

  • Ability to operate material handling equipment

  • Ability to read and follow directions

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks

  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation skills

  • Strong Problem Solving and Decision Making

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Must pass pre-employment assessment

  • Drug screening required

  • Background check required

Additional Internal Requirements:

  • Must demonstrate Core Values

  • Must be in good standing with no disciplinary action or attendance issues

  • Must have performer or higher in last review

  • Demonstrated sense of urgency in production recovery situations

Physical Demands: The associate will be exposed to the manufacturing environment where hazards and requirements may include but are not limited to:

  • Must be able to lift and handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Capacity to stand and walk for extended periods

  • Ability to climb, kneel, bend, stoop, reach and squat

  • Manual dexterity for tool operation

  • Use of ladders and other equipment

  • Must be able to wear ARC Flash Apparel/ Equipment

  • Ability to wear respiratory protection as needed

  • Must be able to work at heights and in small spaces

  • Position may also require crawling under platforms

  • Ability to wear required PPE (hearing protection, steel-toe shoes, safety glasses)

Travel Requirements: Travel is not required in this position.

Work Conditions: The majority of tasks will be performed in a manufacturing setting with exposure to:

  • Noise levels above 80 dB

  • Operation of complex machinery

  • Potential exposure to Solvents, fumes and inks

  • Variable Temperatures

  • May be required to work flexible shifts

  • May require nights, weekends, and holidays

  • An additional $2.50/hr premium for hours worked on NIGHT Shift only (qualifying hours vary by location).
