Duties, Responsibilities & Other

The Technical Lead for Data Centers is both a hands-on technical engineer and a strategic leader responsible for designing, managing, and delivering mechanical systems for mission-critical data centers while building and expanding our Data Center Practice. This role requires an active Professional Engineer (PE) license and expertise in mechanical design for mission-critical facilities. The Practice Leader will balance project delivery, technical oversight, business development, and team growth to position the firm as a leader in the data center market.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Engineering & Project Delivery

    Serve as lead mechanical engineer on data center projects from planning through commissioning.
  • Design and analyze HVAC, chilled water, air handling, CRAC/CRAH, and other mission-critical cooling systems.
  • Perform load calculations, equipment sizing, and system modeling to meet redundancy, efficiency, and uptime requirements.
  • Develop construction documents, specifications, and sequence of operations.
  • Coordinate closely with electrical engineers, structural engineers, architects, and facility operators to ensure integrated designs.
  • Provide technical oversight during construction, review submittals, and resolve field issues to maintain design intent and schedule.

Practice Development & Leadership

  • Build and grow the Data Center Practice, developing service offerings and identifying strategic markets.
  • Mentor and guide engineers and project managers, fostering technical excellence and career development.
  • Lead recruiting of top mechanical engineering talent in the mission-critical sector.
  • Establish design standards, QA/QC processes, and best practices for data center mechanical systems.

Business Development & Client Engagement

  • Identify and pursue new data center projects through industry networking and client outreach.
  • Lead proposal development, contract negotiations, and client presentations.
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing clients and serve as a trusted technical advisor for mechanical systems.

Financial & Operational Management

  • Manage budgets, schedules, staffing, and resource allocation for practice projects.
  • Track key performance indicators including utilization, backlog, and profitability.
  • Provide accurate revenue forecasts and ensure projects meet financial targets.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Enforce company and industry safety protocols during project execution.


Qualifications

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
* Bachelor's Degree in related field (AEC Industry) and minimum of 8 years of related professional experience, or 12 years of
equivalent professional experience
* Proven track record of managing and delivering projects on time and within budget.
* Experience in mentoring technical staff.
* Prior experience serving as a subject matter expert and providing technical guidance.
* Familiarity with ISO compliance requirements and quality management systems.
* Strong technical proficiency in the field in which they are a Technical Lead.
* Proficiency in relevant software/tools.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
* Strong problem-solving skills and creativity in developing solutions.
* Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clients, team members and other stakeholders.
* Commitment to professional development and staying current with industry trends and advancements.

Education and/or Work Experience Preferred:
* Master's Degree or any other advanced degree

Certificates, licenses, and/or Registrations Required:
* Ability to complete the KCI PM Training and Contract Training within six months of start date.

Certificates, licenses, and/or Registrations Preferred:
* Professional license or certification within the field of expertise preferred.
