Posting Summary |
The Mayors Leadership Academy Guaranteed Education Program (
GEP), is a partnership between Rutgers University Newark and NewarkWORKS, designed to enhance the skills, productivity, and employability of selected participants while facilitating the completion of a bachelor's degree for those individuals attending Rutgers University - Newark (RU-N).
A critical component for each
GEP participant is being mentored for two years by a full-time RU-N faculty or staff member. The
GEP Mentor will mentor up to 7
GEP freshmen/participants throughout the 2025-26 academic year and may be re-appointed for a second year.
Key duties include:
Meet one-on-one with each
GEP participant weekly.
* Support
GEP participants on campus, motivate them towards graduation, and connect them to campus resources.
* Stay in touch with the representatives/liaisons at NewarkWORKS to provide updates on
GEP participant's progress and challenges (approximately once a month).
* Stay in touch with NewarkWORKS Liaison, regarding
GEP students who may need additional support services. Meet bi-weekly as a group
GEP Mentees.
* Lead 90-minute cohort group meetings bi-weekly to provide opportunities for
GEP mentees to support one another as they transition to life on campus. Topics for the weekly group meetings are created in consultation with current
GEP mentors and the P&E unit of the Academic Foundations Center (
AFC) at RU-N.
* Ongoing Check-Ins with NewarkWORKS and P&E.
* First Year Mentors - Weekly check In with P&E to support mentors (weekly for first six weeks, check-ins become bi-weekly afterward).
* Second-Year Mentors: Initial check in at the launch of the semester following the first add/drop period (first three weeks) with check ins once every 3 to 4 weeks through the remainder of the semester. Office hours will be available regularly as well.
* Attend an Annual Kick-Off campus event scheduled, hosted, and facilitated by the RU-N and NewarkWORKS to bring together all
GEP participants. Attendance is mandatory for First- and Second- year participants.
* The
GEP Mentor is also required to attend trainings carried out by Rutgers University Newark as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
Full-time Rutgers University-Newark Faculty or senior-level Administrators who have previous teaching and/or working experience with first-generation students, especially from Newark or Greater Newark.
Must have a Bachelor's degree. Master's degree or Ph.D. strongly preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills a must. |

Full-time Rutgers University-Newark Faculty or senior-level Administrator who are well acquainted with the range of resources available to students at RU-N, who are knowledgeable about RU-N's undergraduate curricula, who can use their comprehensive institutional knowledge to help incoming freshmen succeed. |
