Position Summary:

As an Accounting Analyst at our national engineering firm, you will play a vital role in supporting financial operations across multiple projects and offices. You'll analyze financial data, prepare journal entries, assist in project accounting, and ensure compliance with industry standards and government contract requirements, while working in our Springfield IL office. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with a strong knowledge of accounting and an interest in supporting large-scale engineering projects to maximize profitability for our employee-owned firm.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare journal entries related to project costs, labor, and overhead allocations

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of financial models using results from process analysis, comparable companies, and past transactions

  • Assist in maintaining accurate project accounting records, including tracking job costs and revenue results

  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and assist with monthly and year-end closing activities

  • Participate in budgeting and forecasting processes including the analysis of variances between budgeted and actual results to report findings to company management

  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and project teams to ensure accurate financial tracking

  • Prepare financial reports and analysis to support internal decision-making and external reporting

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation), and firm policies and support annual audits as needed

  • Help develop and improve accounting procedures and internal controls

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • 2-4 years of accounting experience, ideally within a project-based or engineering related environment

  • Understanding of cost accounting and revenue recognition for long-term contracts

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics/Power BI, or similar ERP systems preferred)

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to work collaboratively with project managers and technical staff

  • Knowledge of FAR, CAS (Cost Accounting Standards), or government contract compliance is a plus

  • Good business acumen (CPA or progress toward certification is a plus)

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience working in an AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) or professional services firm

  • Familiarity with an ERP system, or similar project accounting tools

  • Strong communication skills and ability to present financial data to non-financial stakeholders

  • Adaptability and problem-solving mindset in a fast-paced, project-driven environment

The salary range for this position is $58,240 and $80,000 per year. Salaries are based on years of experience and skillset.
