The Patient Account Representative is responsible for the collection of monies owed to the hospital, either from insurance companies or directly from patients. This role assists patients with issues related to coverage and payment of accounts and serves as a liaison between the patient and the insurance company when necessary.

I. Major Responsibilities:

Patient Financial Communication
1. Contacts patients using aging reports to discuss outstanding balances.
2. Negotiates payment arrangements, including discounts and payment plans.
3. Responds to patient complaints and inquiries via phone or letter.

Problem Resolution and Interdepartmental Coordination
1. Investigates and resolves billing discrepancies with hospital departments.
2. Refers patients and families to appropriate services and resources.
3. Reviews and responds to patient and family correspondence.
4. Collaborates with hospital staff to resolve claim issues.
5. Maintains documentation of all professional contacts and communications.

1. Billing and collection experience

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
